The Russians are apparently discussing missions to divert Apophis from several potential near misses over the coming decade.

Asteroid collisions being a relatively efficient way to add some energy and start warming up the planet in advance of potential human missions later in the century.

Impacting an asteroid on Mars is an old idea. Apophis is not a candidate because it doesn't cross Mars' orbit.

In addition, it's much to small to have any meaningful effect. If it was a comet, and several kilometres across instead, I'd consider it. There's no fishes on Mars - yet - but there is one from me.

//several potential near misses over the coming decade//

Apophis is due to encounter the Earth in 2029, and then again in 2036. <link>

It won't come anywhere near to the Earth over the coming decade.

       yep, I misstyped decades, thx

Until there are some organisms churning the soil of Mars into compost you can kick it all you want and get nothing but more fallout on the surface. We stand a better chance of warming Mars if we apply many of the remedies for climate change proposed for Earth (I'm thinking whatever we eventually do will be wrong, you realize).

Alpha Phi Omega sisters or APO Phis would NOT appreciate this. AT ALL.

I just don't see where anyone gets off saying this will or will not have an impact. We have enough trouble figuring out the impact of small things <linky>.

If we can have the asteroid impact the Moon it will not only provide decent entertainment but ensure that it won't be a danger in later years.
