Makes you instantly awake and gets the blood pumping.

Approximately 1/2 an hour before your pre-selected waking time, a set of electric motors or hydraulic lifts silently and slowly raises your bed a metre or more into the air. When the pre-appointed time arrives it drops you back to the regular height whilst simultaneously emitting a loud recording including variations such as screams, klaxons, animal roars or shouted warnings.

Appropriately invigorated you can now begin your day.

       We suggest that typical cockpit voice alerts such as "PULL UP ! PULL UP !" or "TERRAIN ! TERRAIN ! " along with the stall warning hooter will have a suitably traumatic effect.

       It may be advisable for users to don an adult incontinence garment before going to sleep.

       I would like this just to see the look on my cats face when the bed drops. Yay. Fear of falling. He'll be pissed off all day...more so than usual. (Hey, AusCan531. Good to not see your face.)

       Hey [bliss], BorgCo is offering a special aftermarket accessory for the Free Fall Bed, it's a custom made under-bed cat nest ... fully collapsible ...

       To stop you getting accustomed to this, which would diminish its effectiveness, the height the bed rises to each night should be random.

       With the proviso that the elevation is constrained by the height of the room ?

       See also <link> for a more unpleasant sort of moveable bed.

       Ooh, I really like the “PULL UP / TERRAIN” bit added to the repertoire. I’d also like to add “We’re going under! Hold your breath!” into the mix.

       You just develop your own hypnopompic jerk reflex and this can be every morning for free...

       //your own hypnopompic jerk reflex// I used to be able to cause myself that falling sensation by, while fully relaxed and lying on my side, closing my eyes and then moving them as far as possible toward "down".

       [hippo] - you could also have the legs of the bed extend - randomly and unequally.

       //"Pull up", etc//
"Sixteen hundred feet... fourteen hundred feet... twelve hundred feet.. pull chute!"
Or some Bowie: "Here, am I sitting in a tin can... floating in a most peculiar wa-a-ay"

       That's pretty cool. When I've tried that I just see two ... backlit circles of light from the pressure phosphenes.

       I had to work pretty hard to make the falling sensation on the cusp of sleep go away. Sucked really. Sometimes it would feel like somebody had grabbed my head and yanked it into the pillow. Try explaining that to your folks when you're like eight or so.

       // "Sixteen hundred feet... fourteen hundred feet... twelve hundred feet.. pull chute!" //

       <Panicky voice, shouting>

       "ROLL TO PORT ... GET THE NOSE UP ... FIRE RETROS ! GOT NO ATTITUDE CONTROL, SERVOS ARE OFFLINE... "

       <Panicky voice, shouting/>

       <Calm, recorded voice>

       "Critical systems failure. Eject ! Eject ! Critical systems failure. Eject ! Eject !"

       <Calm, recorded voice/>

       Over above: tearing metal noises.

       My first week after basic training I woke up standing at attention at the foot of my bed. A drill instructor alarm clock wouldn't be pleasant, but it would be effective.

       I sometimes get a weird vestibular and/or proprioceptive sensation while lying in bed. I wouldn't call it a "falling" sensation, though, more of a "tumbling and twisting in space while remaining motionless in bed" sensation. I can't (yet) start it deliberately, but, once it's started, I can control it to some degree with subtle motions of my pelvis.
