A sturdy buoyant waterproof GPS device covered in solar panels that sends its location back to a central server. Clients go to the web page to track their individual pod's progress. A perfect christmas gift idea.

Well, it would constitute an illegal fishtrap in my local waters, but I'd like a lure on the bottom of mine and will it please call me when it's caught something? Thank you.

I'm not sure about 'Bottle' to satellite communications. As a variation, the idea could also be for a GPS receiver that logs. On washing ashore, the finder can return for a reward. Just need a cheap receiver...and plenty of them.

I like the idea, particularly with Ling's variations. [+]

Such devices exist in the form of probes floated in the oceans to sample temperature and salinity and ocean currents. Some are even capable of submerging and resurfacing.
