A web-like lattice of interconnected rubber tubing, which surrounds your foot. You put the sock onto your foot and then you put your foot into the shoe. Then with the Gel injector, you fill the lattice up with soft Gel until it acheives the desired comfort level. Then you can go hiking.

I'm trying to imagine this. What is the diameter of the tubing? Too thin and you'll never get the gel in there, too thick and you'll need giant shoes. Maybe use air and a thin diameter.

The inner sock I wear on my residual limb is composed on a layer of gel sandwiched between 2 layers of Coolmax. It's very comfortable but a mesh matrix would greatly increase the breathability.

how breathable would the gel itself actually be?
