A new version of communion or mass where the communicant not only gets bread but also biscuits, a selection of cheeses and pates, a taste of a range of different wines (with tasting notes), sliced meats, fruit and salad.

Perk up the soul and fill the stomach - perfect for Sunday lunch.

Did someone say blood & body? [Skewed, Apr 17 2018]

[link]

I've sometimes wondered, if the communion wafer and wine is meant to represent the body and blood of Christ, why not combine them into Holy Communion Black Pudding?
Wrongfellow, Feb 16 2011

       You should post that.

Ewww, for Holy Black Pudding, but Gourmet Church sounds like my cup of whole-leaf Karigane accompanied with jam and cream scones, iced mineral water and drop of plonk. Maybe some chilled plums to wash it down.

       make mine a spritzer.

Will Long Pig be on the menu?

Immanent bun for communion black pudding.

// bun for communion black pudding //

Hmmm .... mashed potato, peas, carrots and gravy ?

Although black pudding and cheese in a bun, accompanied by a pint of Real Ale, is pretty good ...

Take, eat, this is my body. Here's some more body. Now take and eat this different body. Body again here.

The thing about the last supper is that it was supper - those guys tied on feedbag. I cannot imagine all they had was bread and wine. So I like this idea and I dont think it is incompatible with the whole communion concept. Those Trappists who make beer / bread / cheese / liqueurs should hold charitable events like this. Beer and cheese, Sermon, apertif, meal/communion, songs, more beer and cheese, footwashing, digestif, alms plate, closing homily.

Baked - agape feast (often called 'fellowship meal' or similar these days).
spidermother, Feb 16 2011

They had hummus. And Falafels. And tabouli salad.

I demand to know why this was not invented sooner.

Even better, dump all the religious baggage. Just go for the food.
pocmloc, Feb 16 2011

I never understood the desire to mix liquid and bread. It must be a British thing.

That said, some nice cheese selections and perhaps a sorbet between courses would be quite nice. Behold the cheese of Christ.

       Gruyere ... Holy Cheese ....

Sounds more like a Cardiologist's Vacation Home.

//I demand to know why this was not invented sooner.// It's mentioned by Pliny the Younger, and in parts of the New Testament. It wasn't invented sooner because christianity wasn't invented sooner.

       //Behold the cheese of Christ.//

I am afraid to ask what this meant to represent.
MikeD, Feb 18 2011

//I demand to know why this was not invented sooner//

It sort of was. Epicurus advocated the moderate partaking of simple pleasures (such as a good meal), as the road to godliness.
DrBob, Feb 18 2011

OK I know this is old, but anyway.

//The thing about the last supper is that it was supper - those guys tied on feedbag. I cannot imagine all they had was bread and wine.//

[bungston] I think you may have had the wrong meal in mind, it's supper, not meant to be a heavy meal. Supper : noun : an evening meal, typically a light or informal one.

//I never understood the desire to mix liquid and bread. It must be a British thing.//

[threelefts] No, a Greek thing actually, they beat us to that one by centuries.

"The Greeks also drank kykeon, which was both a beverage and a meal. It was a barley gruel, to which water and herbs were added."

//why not combine them into Holy Communion Black Pudding?//

[Wrongfellow] Or as I seem to be on a Greek holiday at the moment how about Spartan black soup [link].

//Epicurus advocated the moderate partaking of simple pleasures (such as a good meal), as the road to godliness//

That wasn't what he really said, a combination of sloppy translation & poor spelling & godhead (which should have been good head anyway) becomes godliness etc. it was wine not a meal & he said "immoderate". Some translators just seem to make it up as they go .. Here's a more accurate rendering of his words.

"immoderate partaking of simple pleasures (such as a good wine), is the road to good head"

There was another bit most translations inexplicably seem to miss that went something like this..

"especially, though not exclusively [he was Greek after all] if in company of women who lack sound judgement of their capacity to imbibe"

Hmm, may I please try a slice of the leg of the lamb of God?

When I hear "gourmet", I think of someone who not only enjoys good food but also self-identifies as being a cut above consumers of cheaper food. "Gourmet" is often served with a delicious side-dish of "exclusive".

So ... what we're doing here is taking the original symbolism of inclusiveness and self-denial, and improving it by replacing those elements with exclusiveness and self-indulgence.

"If you liked Rodrigo Borgia, you'll love this!"

       Mmmm ... [-]

// taking the original symbolism of inclusiveness and self-denial, and improving it by replacing those elements with exclusiveness and self-indulgence. //

Add in some gratuitous kiddie-fiddling and you've summarized Roman Catholicism in one paragraph.

//No, a Greek thing actually, they beat us to that one by centuries.//

No, an Egyptian thing actually. They beat the Greeks to it by a couple of thousand years.
DrBob, May 02 2018

At communion, did you know you can refuse the sacrament and ask for the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil instead? They keep some tucked under the altar.

Do you get a choice of cream or ice cream ?

       Yes, you do!
