       Bah, humbug.

What, you guys don't have Thanksgiving over there? Next you'll be telling me you don't celebrate the Fourth of July, either...
ytk, Nov 29 2013

We certainly celebrate the Fourth of July here! The date is a significant one, and we hold parties and formal events to mark the occasion. Who could possibly forget the 4th July??!! It is the date on which:

414AD: Emperor Theodosus II stepped down in favour of his sister.
1054: A supernova in Taurus was seen by much of the world's population
1456: The Siege of Nándorfeqhérvár (Belgrade) began
1837: The world's longest railway opened, in England
1892: Western Samoa changed the International Date Line, giving itself an extra day.
1951: William Shockley announced the creation of the transistor
2012: CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs Boson

And of course, who could forget that most important date, 4th July 1754: George Washington became the first person in history to surrender to the French, surrendering Fort Necessity to Capt. Coulon de Villiers.

A memorable date for us all.
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 29 2013

It's that sort of thing that caused us to want the divorce in the first place. Oh well, you've still got the Falklands.

And I think you're getting our independence confused with our celebration of peaceful partnership with the native American people.

Now if you really wanted to send us a message you'd start celebrating America's independence on the 4th of July too.
doctorremulac3, Nov 29 2013

Uh, I was responding to [ytk]'s comment, [d'oc].
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 29 2013

Come on everybody, spin a dreidel-shaped turkey leg!
RayfordSteele, Nov 29 2013

My advice: move if they bother you that much.

//The American victory also saved Britain from having to deal with dirt-poor neighbors flooding your job market and becoming a massive tax burden.//

Aw, come on, Utes aren't that bad, are they?

And Britain has always had the Welsh, Irish, and Scottish...

Good boss ... upcoming interview... these seem mutually exclusive for some reason.
RayfordSteele, Nov 29 2013

       What's a Ute?
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 29 2013

       //Uh, I was responding to [ytk]'s comment, [d'oc].//

       10-4

Anywhoo, this holiday I'm giving thanks for all the great posters here at the Halfbakery and for the Halfbakery itself. May it continue for years to come, filling in the little nooks and crannies of my day with high-tech hi-jinks, mutant mechanisms and goofy gadgets.

[blissmiss] - //Happy T-day// and to you, with the maximum amount of dessert consonant with no heartburn and reasonable blood glucose levels, and best wishes besides

       [zeno] - //sinterklaas// and fignorbitallyxxk

       [nmrm] - //humbug// - hold that thought, he's coming

       [ytk] - //What, ... there?// that's not a real bearskin [nmrm]'s wearing on his head

[MaxBuc] - //4th July// I'm sure the Samoan IDL jumprope was the inspiration for your intercalary sibling's date of registration

[docremul] - //divorce// my great^n grandpa Ed spent 4 July 4ths and 5 Thanksgivings in the Tower of London awaiting his execution. Fortunately, he was determined to be a "lunatick" and was sent back to New Hampshire in time to spawn my great^(n-1) grandpa

       [ray] - //dreidel-shaped// ... uh... I've got a banjo, but...

[21] - //migrants ... cold// unfortunately, having been hatched in Arizona, my cold tolerance is low enough I want to pack up about the same time they do

[ray] - //Utes// - [21] - //flooding job markets// There's 5 Utes flooded into spots adjacent to my work cube. (U of Utah alums, not tribespeople.) I forgive 'em, though, for they are exceedingly pleasant to look upon, and would be daughters-in-law of considerable adequacy, if I could get my youngest son's attention diverted from the uncouth burgerflipper he insists on dating.

[{everyone}] - though the celebration of gratitude has regional roots (and tubers and fruits and fowl and confections), we share it with the whole 'Bakery, and by extension, to the whole marble on which it resides. May you all be blessed with good food, good friends, and an absence of undesired explosions.

[doc], I'm with you. The HB, and it's community*, is a significant part of my life (social and mental), and without it I would be more lost than I am.

Out of curiosity, is there an official birthday for the HB? On what date did it spring into existence?

(*I use this term somewhat loosely, as in "a community of wildly disparate parts".)
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 30 2013

The Analects of Confucius open with these words:

The Master said: 'Is it not indeed a pleasure to acquire knowledge and constantly to exercise oneself therein? And is it not delightful to have men of kindred spirit come to one from afar? [...]'

       (Vol 1, Bk 1, Ch 1, vv 1-2, trans. W.E.Soothill)

So //To all bakers, near and far, gone and present// I'm giving thanks.
pertinax, Nov 30 2013

Can you imagine what it would be like if this place didn't exist? ...
<shudders>
I think I would have "lost-it" years ago.
I am very thankful for this place.

//To all bakers, near and far, gone and present//

Gr.: that second comma should be a hyphen.

       10th August?

Henceforth, I shall endeavour (though will probably fail) to keep that day sacred. I shall raise a glass of Kina Lillet*, served over chilled marbles in the Montenegran style, in her honour.

*Sadly, Kina Lillet is no longer produced. However, thanks to a gambling debt in his favour, Sturton secured over 2,500 bottles from the last year of production and, knowing my passion for it, gave** it to me as a St. Casimir's Day gift.

** "gave" is perhaps the wrong term. Sturton was desperately in need of access to an autogyro at the time, and magnanimously*** gave me the Kina Lillet shortly after I had given him one of my autogyros.

*** "magnanimously" is perhaps the wrong term. It is accurate only insofar as it means "reluctantly".
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 30 2013

You got the best part of that deal.
tatterdemalion, Nov 30 2013

It was a really nice autogyro. It had cup-holders.
MaxwellBuchanan, Nov 30 2013

I used to bump that 'Happy Birthday' idea every year in early August but have forgotten to do it for the last few years.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving [blissy]/ still eating turkey?
Somehow [MB] always has something to say about everything...turkey?
xandram, Dec 02 2013

Unlikely. I believe m'lud Buchanan is deathly allergic to turkey, an unfortunate affliction aquired after losing a marathon game of Sumatran Hold 'Em to his archeogenetisist arch-nemesis Claude Bisset-Beloit.
Alterother, Dec 02 2013

Oh, you didn't think I was calling him a turkey?? haha
xandram, Dec 03 2013

If you had been talking about me or [Quest] that would have been my assumption, but no, I didn't think that.
