Iceberg Sculptures

Many cities in the world have ice sculpture exhibitions during winter. Why not extend this to icebergs? Tug your desired iceberg to the nearest harbor, drop off the sculptors on its surface, and let them do their stuff on the ice.

With such a huge mountain of ice, the surface is just the beginning. The entire interior of the iceberg can be carved and tunnelled into numerous shapes and patterns. The whole thing can be left in the harbor for visitors to 'enter' the iceberg and appreciate the work.

The iceberg can also be easily towed off to other ports for display. At each new port, local sculptors can be invited to add their artistry, and visitors can be invited to scribble their names or anything they wish, sorta like iceberg graffiti.

Being so large, the iceberg will probably only melt after a long time, and can be preserved even longer if we keep it in colder waters.

Add - view sculptured Icebergs, sure to be a winner [vimto, Apr 11 2002, last modified Oct 04 2004]

I was hoping this was to do something useful for iceberg lettuce
thumbwax, Apr 11 2002

The sculpture I'd like to see most - "baboo in ice".
neelandan, Apr 11 2002

(Waits for 'Floating Amusement Park on Ice(berg)')

Recreate Mount Rushmore, the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Taj Mahal, etc.
phoenix, Apr 11 2002

And for a bit of irony, the Titanic.
baboo, Apr 11 2002

Why tow them around, just leave them where they are and make an ice sculpture park as a tourist attraction boat cruise. Great idea.
vimto, Apr 11 2002

I like the "recreate the Titanic in ice" idea. For the ultimate in irony, have it crashing into a metal sculpture of an iceberg.
mrouse, Apr 11 2002

I like the ideas of having artist from different nationalities add their own work to the iceberg, I can just imagine a large blend of styles from different cultures blending into one beautiful conglomeration of a sculpture. Kinda like how Red Dwarf was described in the first book.

I wonder if any reactionary groups would protest the "defacement of natural beauty."

Also, you'd need careful planning for sculptures intended to have no "base," since each piece of ice removed would expose a bit more ice above the waterline.
beauxeault, Apr 11 2002

If you added the removed by placing it in an underwater sack attached to the berg below the surface that would solve the exposure problem.
arora, Apr 11 2002

Yeah, nice idea. Combine this with some for-real half-baked proposals floated some years ago to lasso icebergs, wrap them, and tow them to acceptable ports where fresh water is needed. Each one coming in would be a new and interesting sculpture that would ultimately flow from one's own faucet.
entremanure, Apr 12 2002

Hire diver-sculptors to work on the underwater parts which will, as the exposed sections are carved away, become exposed. Build giant refrigerators powered by cold fusion to store the ice-art. Or fly them to the moon using giant blimps! WIBNI

I'm sorry, did I drip some of my sarcasm on you?

Was just about to post this very idea. Glad I googled first. [launches iceberg in the shape of a croissant]

I recently heard tale of a burlesque show wherein two women performed a short skit of unrequited love - one was dressed as an iceberg and the other as the Titanic.

When the two collided in their coital attempt, the Titanic costume broke open and people fell out.
