Jump Elevator

Elevator that throws you up to the floor you want.

I'm imagining this as a one-person tube-shaped vertical shaft. From the ground floor, a person gets in, presses the button for the floor to which they wish to go. The hydraulic floor accelerates you to the velocity necessary for you to get to that floor. As you go sailing up to your floor, the hydraulic device sinks back to the ground to wait for the next passenger. When you arrive at your floor (the apex of your flight), you start to fall, and a metal floor slides into the cylinder to comfortably catch you.

Presumably this shaft is only one way. I wouldn't want to meet someone on the way down as I'm on the way up.

Yes, I think it would have to be one-way. Also probably could only start at the ground floor, unless this hydraulic "booster" was as long as the building is tall.

Could the hydraulic floor decelerate you when you want to go back to the ground floor?
If so, I'd better get a take-out lid for my coffee.

I'm not so sure I want to be upchucked.

In the Dragonlance fantasy world, the gnome race (a bunch of humorously impractical inventors) uses gnome-a-pults to get from floor to floor of their mountain home. Which also happens to be a mordant volcano.

I knew there was something you guys reminded me of.
