Keeping up with the Smiths

Title derived from the film 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith'

This sitcom features a pair of neighboring Texas families with the recurring theme being a competition between the dads, both firearms enthusiasts, to stay up to date with the latest and greatest gunsafe technology to keep their teenage kids from getting their hands on the precious arsenals. The dads each bribe the others' kids to steal the guns and deliver them to the rival dad, who presents the owner with hilarious, good-natured challenges to get them back.

The show would teach kids the importance of handling the firearms responsibly should they find them unsecured, as well as showing gun owners real flaws in common household firearms security measures.

I was thinking 1980's Manchester band...that'd be pretty easy, just be glum and wear a long coat..see Exhibit A.

Need I remind you what site this is?

These neighbours, they wouldn't be the Wesson family would they?

I was hoping someone would ask that question.

Erm yes, it's a transatlantic difference, on the west side it's more Smith and Wesson, on the east side, it's more stiff letter to the Times.

Like [not_morrison], I was expecting to see Morrisey featured in this somewhere.

I thought it was a comedy remake of Matrix Reloaded, in which Neo and co live next door to 3 trillion Agent Smiths, each house attempting to out- decorate the other in their front gardens.

Well, it does now, Exhibit A etc..bereft of firearms we have to make do with irony, as best we can, which in a confined space can prove equally deadly "Alcohol, taken in sufficient quantities, may produce all the effects of drunkenness" etc.

writer currently victim of box sake..please give generously <shakes tin with a few coppers at the bottom>

Count me in with the 'I thought this was going to be...' crowd. Although I was thinking along the lines of Reeves & Mortimer doing Slade (link).

I don't see why we can't blend all these seemingly disparate elements into one cohesive populist package: a transatlantic sitcom where the Wesson family (who pepper their badinage with didactic passages concerning the proper use of firearms) live next door to a family called the Smiths (who are, in fact, three identical Morriseys and their pet consumer monkey, also called Morrisey), the show turning each week on the families' Simpson-Flanders style rivalry/clashing views on, well, everthing. Perhaps Wesson Daughter #1 could fall in live with Sensitive Mini-Morrisey #2, the indeterminate gender of MM#2 sparking theological and moral difficulties, that sort of thing. Penelope Keith and Tom Selleck guest star as visitors to the Wesson and Smith houses respectively.

Only if it has the Chuck and Bob ventriloquism act out of Soap, and it plugs lil' Chulthu from time to time.
not_morrison_rm, Feb 21 2013

Could the Wesson family be a family of silver / black / swordsmiths?
RayfordSteele, Feb 21 2013

Yes I thought this would be a kind of game-show challenge where the contestant has to wield a series of ever larger sledges, following a tricky and gymnastic and ever-changing striking pattern.
pocmloc, Feb 21 2013

Ah, sledgehammers, you had me confused for a while.
