Kung Fu Swisher

Intimidation through sound effects

One of the many fun aspects of Asian martial arts films are the over-the-top sound effects. The hero swings around to assume a stance and you hear swish-swish-whoosh as his arms and legs knife through the air. I think it would be fun to have this in real life.

I imagine a small box like one of those key-chain sound effect gadgets. Instead of buttons to activate the sounds, it will have an internal mercury switch (or equivalent technology) that plays the sound when moved quickly.

It has a pin on the back so you can attach one to each sleeve. Perhaps it could be disguised as a piece of jewelry to make it less noticeable.

Now you can wave your hands through the air in kung-fu style, and get the same swish-swish sounds that Jackie Chan gets in the movies. If you’re truly into it, buy several extra units and attach them to your legs and put one on your hat for head moves.

Black belt not required.

       I'll take four ! [shhhiiiiooooo]

Add additional circuitry - if you miss, you get the swoosh sound - if you hit, you get the thunking sound.

Completely silly and unnecessary. I love it! The sooner you make 'em, the sooner I'll buy 'em.

I was sure the good doctor was going to write, "Sheesh, just whip the air with a thin stick."

wonderful... even better if it can be adapted to make the corduroy sound even when you are walking about in non-corduroy slacks

Can we program dialogue into the device so that it speaks for us while we move our lips in a nonsynchronous manner?

When you can snatch the Kung Fu Swisher from my hand...it is time for you to go.

"So when did we hire Bruce Lee?"
"I think he's an intern."

I thought of a slightly different implementation, which would be to just put the motion sensors on your arms/legs/head, and have the sounds generated centrally by a larger player. The advantages would be you'd only need one battery, and you could probably get a higher fidelity and louder sound effect out.
krelnik, Apr 21 2004

Several more implementations come to mind:

"Unplugged": use venturi whistle and clackers on bracelets and anklets. The whistles whistle whenever a fast move is executed; the clackers are set to "crack" on a sudden deceleration.

"Expanded mode"(part of the electronic version) does slow-mo sounds too.

       [+] of course.
