Consider your average smartphone, which is rectangular in
shape.
Rectangles always have a longer dimension and a shorter
dimension.
With respect to the long dimension, at one edge of the phone is
a
speaker, and at the opposite edge is a microphone. You hold
the phone
near your head
so that the microphone-edge is close to your
mouth, while
the speaker-edge is close to your ear. There is a limit to how
long the
long dimension of the phone can be, because your head is only
so big.
So let's consider a larger phone, anyway. We want the shorter
dimension
of this smartphone to be the same as the longer dimension of
the typical
existing smartphone. On the back side of the phone, right in
the middle,
stretching across the shorter dimension, we mount a handle,
like you
might put on a cupboard door to pull the door open. On the
face-side of the phone,
in the middle of one longer edge, we put a speaker, and in the
middle of
the other longer edge, we put a microphone.
Now you can use the handle to hold this large phone near your
head, and
since the distance between the microphone and the speaker is
"normal"
for smartphones, you can use it just fine. But when you pull
the phone
away from your head, to use it for other purposes, you have a
nice large
wide-screen!

one of them is likely to be used when a smartphone is in "phone"
mode. This wider device could have 3 speakers, 2 more at opposite
ends of the long dimension, and also for stereo. The one in the
middle, that I originally described in the main text, would be dedicated
only for phone-mode use. |

If you had, you'd realise that its advantages-
like a really good keyboard, excellent RF
performance, bright clear screen and fast

extent that this anno is being written on a
Flipout. And we have taken the trouble to
aquire a spare, for when this one wears out. |
