Lifeguard Mortar or bazooka

Laser guided lifesaving device delivery system

I got this idea while reading the "2 way radio binocular" idea and wondered if you could add a flashing laser pointer on a pair of binoculars so that when a lifeguard saw a swimmer in trouble, they could press a button on the binoculars which would turn on the laser pointer. Then activate a low power mortar which would fire a laser guided Nerf-type lifesaving device to the swimmer.

Alternately, you could create a large Nerf bazooka, which would deliver the device with lower tech. The downside of this is the level of wind usually found at a beach leading to poor accuracy with a low mass projectile. This could be improved a little by using a projectile that inflates in contact with water, so you could use something small and reasonably light that would still be usefull to the swimmer.

Wind compensation is a known science in military target-acquisition systems.

Yes, I saw that, in fact it is the reason I picked the category, but it is mostly unrelated. Your idea throws the lifeguard, mine more realistically throws a Nerf like projectile.

I agree that wind compensation is a known science, but I'd disagree that it is known for this light a projectile, this long a flight time and those wind conditions, as the wind conditions could change radically during the flight, so without some active correction your accuracy would never be enough.

Rather than a Nerf, this should fire a solid projectile like an airbag that explosively inflates in the air over its target.

Might take his mind of the whole drowning bummer.

Once the narcosis takes hold it's really peaceful... not quite as peaceful as freezing of course, but peaceful.

Lifeguard trebuchet- //...gets something like a paintball gun, but it fires different coloured polystyrene spheres, with a hole through them. Then, at the cry for help, the beach people fire the spheres towards the drownee, who can then collect the spheres, thread them on the piece of string and make themselves a life belt//

Same but different, but your idea is more practicable, I'm presuming it could be mocked up to look like an RPG for scaring the crap out of the drownee purposes?
