Sometimes it's desirable to plan lunch or dinner with one or more people in other town(s), and have the meal be at a place which is well-reachable by everyone. It would be useful if a mapquest-style service could be asked to provide a list of some type of business (e.g. restaurant: Italian) which would be readily reachable by people coming from several addresses. Although one can attempt by hand to manage something similar by picking a point geographically near the middle of the people who are going to meet, the non-uniform density of roads means this often doesn't work too well. A service which could recognize that road distance doesn't always correlate with crow-flies distance would thus be handy.

A good idea - it's entirely feasible for some algorithm embedded within Google Maps or any other online mapping tool to suggest good rendezvous locations for a group of friends. I'm almost surprised this doesn't already exist

Paid advertising in online services has probably increased a lot over the past couple of decades

I'm almost certain it does, but it may not have in 2004. I'll look for examples sometime between my 2nd and 5th cuo of coffee today.
