Rotary Birdhouse Hole

One house caters to different species

With birdhouses, restricting the entry hole size will typically restrict the size bird that may enter and nest. Large holes will admit more bird sizes and perhaps crowd out smaller, less defensive species but small holes may leave the house unused if that small species isn’t around.

With a hole sized for the largest desirable bird already bored one might create a circle of wood, with additional holes bored in the style of a rotary telephone dial, and mount it similarly to the face of the birdhouse. This way, the desired hole size may be dialed to line up with the entryway, and pegged in place.

Add a motor, and it could double as a mincer.

[Ian Tindale] is not only stranger than we imagine, he is stranger than we can imagine.

Incidentally, the Eurasian Lorikeet is one of the very few birds whose chicks are larger than the adults. Females of the species, when breeding for the first time, will sometimes select a tree-hole large enough to admit them, but too small to allow the chicks to exit. This is one of those baffling failures of evolution.

Hmm, these must be much larger than ordinary birdhouses, one could even say they might be giants.

What you need here is one of those dilating iris doors.

I always thought that was the job of Universe Man.

I think this is brilliant, and as an avid bird watcher/lover, I want to take this moment to thank thee, [whatrock], for creating an answer to this birdy dilemma.

Pleased I could bring you bliss [miss].

       Baked!

OK, I baked it, only moi and not some vendor or other. It's kinda clunky, version 1.0 but fully functional. A large bird will be well-pleased with the available volume; a little wren or chickadee may indeed get lost in there.

       Yay me!

       Nice! Yay you indeed.

       Link? Maybe a picture...

^ Help me if you would, I'm new to this bit: how do I get a picture up and available for all to see?
whatrock, Oct 05 2020

Well, you need a digital camera or a cell phone which takes pictures. Save images you want to your computer in a jpeg format.
I'm cheap so I found a free image hosting site. Once you've chosen a site to host your pictures they will have an 'upload' or 'add' button which will ask 'from net?' or 'from your computer?'.
Click 'from computer' and browse your files until you find the one you want.
Name it.
Caption it if you care to.
Click on the address at the top of the page and copy, (cntrl c), the address then paste (cntrl v) into the destination section that pops up when you click on [link] here at the halfbakery.

The Admins can give users permissions to add inline illustrations. It is, however, a rare and precious privilege.

You could email She Who Must Be Obeyed and ask very, very nicely. Self-abasement, grovelling, and banging your forehead on the floor while crying "I am not worthy !" may have the desired result.

       Or then again, perhaps not.

This brings to mind something I was thinking this morning. On our semi-sometime Zoom meet-ups, we could have a gathering whereas we all, or those who wish to, bring something you have made, or tried to make from the bakery, to show and tell. It could be fun. This is a perfect example. [whatrock], we must be psychically in synch.

[8th] I contacted SWMBO and begged for permission and received valuable enlightenment. In the interest of saving disk space I went with an outside host (thanks [2fries]).
