There have been a few low-tech versions of this proposed here, but I don't think any of them get it quite right. The rooftop periscope is a neat idea, but can't see over tractor-trailers that may be in front of you, and the side-facing periscope on the driver's side doesn't help at all with the passenger
side of the vehicle, and is subject to the same problems manual periscopes have always had.
It isn't only in passing maneuvers that the ability to see ahead in the adjacent lane can be helpful. Many accidents occur in highway exit lanes, where traffic stopped on the off-ramp can be backed up well onto the highway itself. If you're following a large vehicle, you may not be able to see that traffic is completely stopped in the exit lane you're about to change into, and if you merge over at the same speed as the truck you're following, you're a gonner. Same thing with traffic merging into that same lane from an on-ramp.
The idea here is to have forward-facing cameras on the side mirrors, with the feed directed to the same infotainment screen that your backup cam is displayed on. When you activate your turn signal, the camera feed from that side is automatically displayed on-screen.
Side Mirror Facing
Front-View_20Side_20Mirror Works when the vehicle is off. [minoradjustments, May 19 2025]

Replace both side mirrors with 360° spherical cameras? (On a stalk.) Takes care of seeing your blindspot too.
Personally I think mirrors are better, but cameras have their advantages too.
Another place to put one is in the centre of the front bumper (ie. the front-most point of the vehicle) facing left & right. For a better view when pulling out of a driveway/building.
(Aside: most cars that have cameras instead of wing mirrors have a comically large blob to hold the camera. Like, have you seen how small modern digital cameras are? Why the huge blob?!) |

I can't help but hear that last question in the voice of Professor Membrane from Invader Zim. |

I made a super low-tech solution for those of us who must drive left-drive cars on the left side. Scary. [link] |

Surely the solution is to have the driver's seat and control column mounted on a cherry-picker arm? Perhaps controlled by a discreet neck-sensor. You lean your head to the right, and the arm swings you up and out of the car and over the right lane. |
