The Forked Tongue

When you communicate by the written word, all messages consist of a mixture of sentiments, facts and invented material, with the overall colour of the text emerging from the interplay of several factors. The end result can be positive/negative; aggressive/benign; complimentary/insulting; warm/cool; factual/fictional. Sometimes the format of a “shit Sandwich” is used where there is a complimentary remark at either end, with the nasty shit contained in the middle.

Programme That Speaks With A Forked Tongue enables two opposing versions of every block of written words to be created. Here’s how it works:
Simply called The Forked Tongue, it’s a piece of AI enabled software that simultaneously generates in real time an exact opposite of everything you type in. You can decide which one to use on completion of both versions. It can also splice together the two outcomes to create a single Shit Sandwich version.

This means, as you write a letter of complaint (for example) The Forked Tongue produces one filled with compliments and praise. If you make a description of something being short, fat and coated with festering grease, this will at the same time become tall, lean and coated with a fine iridescence. Late arrivals become punctual to the second; life saving vaccines become toxic DNA disruptors; aggressive wars become pursuits of peace; “It was so great to see you” becomes “how dare you come here looking like that”. Descriptions of delightfully quiet hotel rooms equipped with comfortable beds are also realised as riotously noisy hell holes, featuring lumpy mattresses riddled with bed bugs. CVs indicating that you haven’t much experience of the job in question are transformed into describing you as being one of the world’s leading experts.

I often set my students creative exercises involving opposites - The Forked Tongue extends that thinking process with the end results requiring a decision to made as to which version will be used.

• Aside George Orwell had this nailed in 1984 (a book now banned in schools in Texas) with his description of Newspeak, and it would be very interesting to let The Forked Tongue create a version of 1984 they would approve of children reading there. (see link)

1984 - Banned in Texas https://www.marshal...dbooks/1984-orwell/
it's not the only one [xenzag, Sep 02 2025]

My obsessed mackerel troll fan can't shut up about my country as he begs for my attention.

(xenzag's life partner rolling over in bed to have a serious talk.)

"Xenzag honey, I'm concerned about you never thinking about anything else besides Donald Trump and America and trying to empty the Halfbakery of anybody who might want to occasionally talk about other things."

(xenzag) "Oh yea, well you don't even exist so screw you!"

(xenzag's life partner) "Oh that's right.." (POOF!)

Looks who's talking about 1984 thought crime. Mr "List all the gods to make fun of except one."

Here comes the mackerel troll again..... zzzzzzzz

The one who starts it is the troll.

The proposed idea relies on the original message being in some sense one-dimensional and, furthermore, on that dimension having a mid-point around which the message could be flipped.

Suppose, for example, that you fed it Tolstoy's "War and Peace", which is a mixture of fact and fiction; would it produce "Peace and War", being a mixture of fiction and fact?

[xenzag], according to your link, one school district (only) tried to restrict 1984 (and some other titles) to access with parental consent, in the school library, but then a judge stopped them. So that's not really a ban, it's just a choice about how to stock a school library, and even that quite modest choice failed. There are horrible things happening in the world, but I don't think that's one of them.

This is not a boxing match, and I'm not a referee, but if it were a boxing match, the referee would be stopping it about now, on the grounds that both fighters are clearly punch-drunk and swinging wildly.

Or we could just call it a draw and be nice to each other.

I'd put out a glove tap.

Xenzag, what about it? Peace treaty?
doctorremulac3, Sep 02 2025

//would it produce "Peace and War", being a mixture of fiction and fact?// Good question and capable of being tested.
xenzag, Sep 02 2025

So you’re gonna back off on the constantly obsessing about Donald Trump and how horrible Americans are as well so people with different points of view can share this creative space without all the political hate posts?(Reaches out hand)
doctorremulac3, Sep 02 2025

//They have no effect on me//

Mmm ... if that were entirely true, [xen], then you probably wouldn't have to say it.
pertinax, Sep 02 2025

(Hand's still extended in offer of a peace agreement. Let the offer be on the record, if you don't insult my people and my country, I won't insult you. I will absolutely honor that agreement. Up to you xen.)

       Hello?
doctorremulac3, Sep 02 2025

You never have any justification for insulting me. This is a platform for halfbaked ideas and responses to those ideas and it's not a quid-pro-quo that I must only post ideas of which you approve or you will deliver insults to me. Who do you think you are? Post your comments about my ideas but stop trolling me with personal comments. You try to poison everything I post. I have a lot of emails from other bakers about this, and they're all tired of it. It's boring and univentive. Try being creative and see how it brings your mind to a more positive place.
xenzag, Sep 02 2025

That’s a no. Okay. You’re free to insult my people, I’m free to insult you back since that's your choice. I think that’s really dumb but it’s the aggressor who determines the nature of the interaction.

       Oh well, I tried.

But keep in mind, I’m NOT going to respond to xenophobic attacks against millions of people by countering them with the same evil, I’m limited to attacking the attacker which is what gets you so upset. I will NOT insult your people like you insult mine. Treating an entire country, culture, race or religion like they’re lowly animals to be made fun of is disgusting so my responses to those attacks are limited to the attacker, not his beautiful culture that I really do love and that I share lineage with.

But offer still stands, as it has for years now. Peace is beautiful, your people are beautiful, your country is beautiful and I'm sure you have aspects of yourself that are beautiful as well. Being kind to others and their people is always an option.

Reverse Alarm Clock – Instead of waking you up, it predicts when you will wake up naturally and gently nudges bedtime backwards over weeks.

Thermal Mug with Timer-Lid – Mug refuses to open until coffee has cooled to “optimal temperature,” saving you from mouth burns.

Pothole Party Poppers – Biodegradable confetti you can dump into potholes, turning every bump into a tiny festive explosion until fixed.
