dumpster alarm

Try to fill up my dumpster with your trash, and an alarm wails into the night

Even though we have it emptied 3 times a week, there is always some fool who fills it up before I can dump refuse and landscaping waste. I end up with a full dumpster and a pile of trash beside it.

Some cheap loud alarm, maybe on a rope so you can pull it out, not very sensitive trigger. 30 pounds or so before it squawks. Maybe locate underneath dumpster so it doesn't get thrown away.

Silent alarm to my phone would work as well.

A sound like a baby crying under all that worn out carpet would be fun, but get me fired.

Get a lock for the dumpster. It costs a lot to pay for other people's trash.

Both lock and lids long since gone. The plastic lids don't stand up well to knives and brute force.

Makes you wonder if a motion-activated overhead rainbird sprinkler covering the dumpster area might not be effective to deter uninvited users. As the owner of the property, you would know where the key-controlled on/off bypass switch was located. This solution would be relatively silent and non-lethal. You should be harmless from legal ramifications if the dumpster area is properly gated from use by unapproved persons and appropriately signed.

The lock may have still been there, but the plastic lids were cut. A lock with nothing to lock. A nearby shed lock was cut off with a torch, but nothing taken. Crazy people is our best guess. No reason sometimes.

//Put a .22 LR bullet in the arses of exactly 3 thieves who came into my yard, never had a problem with bicycle thieves again.//

Are you fucking serious? I hope you're lying, [21] - I have you pegged as a stern guy, but not psychopathic.

A .22 is still quite dangerous, and shooting someone in the arse is not funny. Their femoral artery could easily be hit, then you've killed some kid over a bike. I've shot lots of things with 22's and have a lot of respect for the little pill's power - there are some interesting vids on youtube about some tests guys have done, shooting ballistic gel, and in one case a sunday roast, out at 100+, even 200 yards. A .22 wouldn't kill you from shock trauma, but it penetrates well and could easily intersect something vital.

The castle defence concept, in my mind, does not and should not cover setting traps for people, nor should it cover anything other than imminent personal danger of yourself or other residents.

If this really is true, I'd take that comment down if I were you, mate.

Ie that could possibly constitute confession to felony assault, or similar.
Custardguts, Jul 31 2013

What's needed is a lockable, slightly larger titanium dumpster into which you can place your dumpster.

Aha, I think I have just the thing...sealink.

Cool, cool. I get the frustration - similar circumstances here, truth be told.

Thing is, I'd never discharge a firearm at someone, if I didn't want to kill them. Because killing them is a very possible outcome. "but it was only a .22" has been said many times, I'm sure of it, probably more than once in a courtroom.
Custardguts, Jul 31 2013

It seems to me that a blank would be nearly as effective as a .22. Maybe I'm a chicken, but if I was attempting to steal a bike and heard gunshots when I touched it, I probably wouldn't come back whether I was hit or not.

Anyone know the legality of firing blanks compared to bullets?
scad mientist, Jul 31 2013

//Haven't killed anyone// How do you know? Did the people you shot come back to say "hey, it's OK, I'm still alive"? But, after all, we're talking about bicycles here, so they get what they deserve. Another good one would be to leave a wallet on your garden path, and hide out in an upstairs window with a bottle of petrol handy.
MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 31 2013

The old standby was a shotgun loaded with rock salt. Generally not lethal, and there's nothing saying the second shell had to have the same load.
MechE, Jul 31 2013

Well, keep it up. You're bound to get one of them sooner or later. I like the no-nonsense approach - reminds of the good old days when we'd hang people for stealing a teaspoon.
MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 31 2013

// leave a wallet on your garden path,

I'm sure the last time your wallet fell on the 3rd under-footman it took a team of five men and portable crane to release him.
