A button to display the last few seconds of closed captioning, for when speech is unclear

So the device records the closed captioning. When somebody says something you can't quite hear, hit the button and it displays the last few seconds. That way, if you can't hear what somebody said, you can hit the button.

The "instant replay" on TiVo and the like doesn't cut it. If it was muddled the first time, it'll probably be muddled on the replay. And you have to rewind a fair bit to pick up the captioning stream.

But what if the closed-captioning transcribers couldn't hear it either?

2003! There are people that weren't born then!!!!
pashute, Oct 12 2023

This is actually a great idea

[pashute] I suppose you could say that about any date in the past
hippo, Oct 12 2023

Not //any// date, [hippo]; only dates between now and about 120 years ago.
pocmloc, Oct 12 2023

Very true [pocmloc] - I stand corrected

       OK thanks.

You can sit down again now

// There are people that weren't born then!!!! //

There have been, there are, and (if you're not careful of verb tenses) there will be - as long as you don't mean "people alive at this very moment."

Thus you could say it of the entire human population past and present and maybe future - exclusive of the very small cohort of those whose birth occurred in 2003, or the even smaller subset born on 27 May 2003.

It all depends if you take the word 'then' to imply a continuous state of being or a discrete event. The meaning can thus either be "There are people that weren't born by that point in time but who after that point were in the state of having been born", or "There are people for whom the time of their birth was not the exact time this idea was posted on May 27th 2003"

// the exact time this idea was posted on May 27th 2003 //

Would it help for me to figure that out to the second?

       ---

System timestamp for it is 1054054800 - that's Tue May 27 2003 17:00:00 GMT+0000 but I'm a little suspicious of it being posted at EXACTLY 17:00;00 GMT. Did HB system ever round those or did Piquan just manage to click OK at that exact instant?

[a1] It wouldn't help. Everyone is is a state of having been born. Even the dead, though they don't know it. The unborn are different than the undead. More that 237 unborn can dance on the head of a pin, whereas only a few entire, or a small collection of undead parts will fit. This word salad is like asking, "Yo, Jake, is Wilson still dead?"
