Maths 101...philosophy 101...scams 101...
I propose, as a prelude to these 101s, a 101 101 to teach
people which 101s are available.

//Is there a Dalmatians 101 ?// |

Since we are on the subject of amusing bon mots,
an irrelevant aside. John Thierry is on trial for
shouting racist abuse at another player. |
|
|
According the BBC, he called the other player a
"F****** black c***" (that's how they showed it on
screen). For some reason, it amuses me that the
only word of this undoubtedly racist slur that they
could show, uncensored, was the only racial
epithet in the phrase. |

I have just signed up for 303 101, 808 101 and 909 101. |

Are cargo cults part of the syllabus? |

|
Yes, right after B1 engine design. |

Don't give universities any more ideas for useless courses
they can require as prerequisites for real courses. I almost
dropped out because of that. |

Having only encountered "101" as a phrase rather
than a taught course, are "101"s the equivalent of A-
levels in the UK system? |
|
|
Generally, in course numbering the first digit denotes the target
year of instruction, i.e. 1 for freshmen up to 4 for seniors, and 5-
9 for graduate students of various levels. This would be the year
in which you would be expected to take that course, although
you might well take it later than that, particularly for courses
outside your major. The last two numbers are less well defined,
although often the broadest classes in a subject will have the
lowest numbers. X01 is usually an introductory course at that
level, although X00 is common as well. |
|
|
So for example, while Geology 464 might be Chemical
Hydrogeology at a given school, Geology 101 would almost
universally be Rocks for Jocks. |
