Am toothpaste, PM toothpaste

Toothpaste for used for morning and one for night

2 types of toothpaste.

1 paste is for the morning. It contains caffeine to help wake you up.

The other night paste contains a sleeping agent to help you fall asleep.

Toothpaste sales could double. Now the consumer has to buy 2 types of toothpaste.

(German) Morgens Aronal, abends Elmex. https://www.elmex.d...on/aronal-and-elmex
German toothpaste brand with split personality. Their slogan is "In the morning Aronal, in the evening Elmex." No caffeine / sleeping agent, though. [jutta, Nov 28 2000, last modified Oct 01 2022]

Could the stimulant and sleeping draught be made in a format that could be absorbed through the gums? That would help people who didn't eat their toothpaste.

Sure sales would skyrocket -- your toothpastes would be addictive!
danrue, Nov 28 2000

The thought here was to have the product absorbed through the mouth. Swallowing toothpaste would be horrible!
DeadPaisly, Nov 29 2000

DeadPaisly is right, your tongue is covered in tiny cuts, perfect for absorbing drugs like caffeine or sleeping agents. That's why smokeless tobacco is addictive, the nicotine goes into these cuts and into your bloodstream (although some brands actually put fiberglass into the tobacco to make tiny cuts in your lip to do the same). Although I disagree that the toothpaste sales would double. Think about it. Instead of using one toothpaste twice, you are using two toothpastes once. You still use the same amount of toothpaste even if it is two different kinds. Although products like this would be incredibly expensive, which would increase sales, but they wouldn't double. Great idea though!

mmm... addictive toothpaste. just the thing to bring up profits. if you're into that sort of thing :-b

I see the sleeping agent toothpaste as a potential problem. Different people use different amounts of toothpaste. You would need to get a concentration that is strong enough to work for those who go light on toothpaste, but weak enough that people who use gobs of paste don't overdose or anything. There's also the problem that sleeping pills are generally a temporary solution, and stop working after a couple of weeks. There are really cool explanations for why that happens (homeostasis and such). Pretty charts. But a bummer for those who have trouble sleeping, I suppose.

A related issue is that of a buildup of tolerance. Would people have to use more and more toothpaste over time to get a high enough concentration of caffeine / sleeping pills?

Just make sure to make the morning toothpaste in a flavor that doesn't clash horribly with orange juice.

       why not cocaine and morphine?

This is actually a great idea and I expect to see it in stores soon (well, not with caffeine additives or dormicum suppliments). Unlike the n-bladed razor, and the toothbrush (now with Uvula cleanser and tongue scraper) toothpaste has never evolved beyond volcanic ash, or other abrasive. The maintenance of pH levels, the predominant control of cavity causing mechanisms, differs from during the day to during the night. It only makes sense that you need a toothpaste to account for this.

       * Well, Crest obviously thinks so: they have "night-time" toothpaste.

[DeadPaisly] created an account and this idea on November 28th 2000, and was never heard from again.

Do you think maybe the toothpaste industry had him eliminated?

No [norm...]. You will probably find he/she is in indentured labour...

I read the ideas title as "Am toothpaste, FM toothpaste" and thought that the idea would involve radio transmitters within ones teeth. +

In asia, mint is not thought of as the refreshing flavor, but tea is. So toothpaste is more often tea flavored.

A little late on this one, but I call bullshit. Not only is your tongue not normally covered in tiny cuts, but the idea that chewing tobacco contains fibreglass is a myth.

I wonder if the oral bacterial culture differs, due to pH, and hence a targeted scheme could choose your own personal symbiotic biota. Toothpaste just for you.
