[shapu]'s Paper File Compression idea [link] made me think of folding paper into hundreds of narrow pleats, so that each sheet could fit inside a large drinking straw.

A small label with details of the straw's contents is then attached, preferably dangling from each straw on a piece of cotton about 50 cm long which could also be colour-coded.

The straws could then be fired into the ceiling (most offices have those suspended, soft, panel thingies) by drones skilled in rubber band slingshot operation (as most of us...err, them... are).

The ceiling above a drone's cubicle could be divided into Folder Zones, and by using straws of different colours the drone could effectively create sub-folders within each zone. This would also present the drones with an artistic outlet.

File retrieval is by searching the dangling labels in the relevant Folder / sub-folder / string / label colour.

Also will provide the opportunity for fetching Mexican-elvish office cleaning lady / gentleman to be promoted to fetching office iron operator / paper straightener..

I'm not convinced about the pleating bit - how about implementing the advanced technology of 'rolling' instead? ;)

       (+) I like this one.

[mountainperson] If it's important enough to file, it's important enough to pleat.
ConsulFlaminicus, Jan 29 2005

This is brilliant. Another benefit is that large documents create a jungle of hazard - office life would be enhanced by the risk of having an Annual General Report canister detach above ones head. People would walk around with their gaze fixed above them.

I agree with [yamahito] on the rolling idea - it would turn the act of opening a document into The Ritual of the Scroll.

Consdering that much of my home life is spent skirting around my beloved's "Floor Filing System", I'm all for this one. [+] A croissant to you, ConsulFlaminicus, despite your ridiculous name.

Glad I could unintentionally nudge you in the right direction.

I love it when I help by not doing anything.

+ and even if the cabinets are not full, there is always a straw handy if needed...for whatever.

I wish I'd been an office drone in the 1980s just to see how many people carried straws around in their pockets. You know...for whatever.
shapu, Jul 31 2006

Really important files could of course be laminated, and pleated into a peculiar conic trifoil shape sometimes known as the "paper airplane" for easy access without getting them through the straw.

Would the fletching elvish office cleaning lady (for my office anyway!) be in charge of tying small feathers to the side of the straws for aerodynamic stability?
ye_river_xiv, Jul 31 2006

Aha! This is what the world needs! How about we put pointed ends on the straws, so they stick to the ceiling. Also increases the risk of...I don't know...death. Cool.

And I think maybe they should ALL be pleated into "paper airplanes". They go up faster, and they glide ever-so-coolly when they come down. Pull a string in the proper direction and it sails to it's destination!

[+] For wierdness. Think of how this would look in an office!
