Chatting Chess AI with a Board

Talkative chess coach AI

Imagine a chess AI that doesn’t just spit out engine lines, but actually sits with you at a shared board and chats about the game.

It remembers the moves and comments in plain language: “That pawn push weakens your king — maybe keep it back?”

You can ask questions: “What if I castle queenside?” or “Why is my rook sulking in the corner?”

Bonus voice mode: it literally speaks back while you play, like a chatty coach across the table.

We tried something like this. It worked — until we decided to rewind a few moves. That’s when the AI got confused, started forgetting where pawns belonged, and offered advice for a position that no longer existed. It wasn’t broken, just… endearingly lost. A bit like playing with a human partner who looks away for one turn and comes back saying “Wait, wasn’t your knight over there?”

Not perfect — but maybe that’s the charm.

       That was from HAL-9000?

Yup, the name which was thought to be an homage to IBM. Letters before IBM are HAL but it was a coincidence. HAL stood for "Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer".

However HAL singing "Daisy Bell" WAS an homage to IBM and the first time a computer sang a song with a digitally synthesized voice. (link)
