Comedy Commentary TV

We've all had that friend who makes priceless comments during TV shows and commercials. I propose this: a 24-hour TV network of shows from other channels...documentaries, movies, sitcoms, TV shows, etc. Infomercials and commercials, the absolute best stuff, is also included. Basically (with permission by the original networks and production companies), the shows and commercials will be rebroadcast, except a comic or generally funny person will watch them and make funny and sarcastic comments, making fun of the shows. Then, the commentary is re-edited in to replace the original audio, and the shows are broadcast on the channel. BTW...this is NOT the same thing as the Overdub Channel.

       [Yabbadab] If it changes your opinion at all, I don't mean old, unheard-of horrible movies that were made 20-something years ago. I mean up-to-date shows, commercials, movies. Some parts of it are the same, some are different. But come on, assuming this idea was going to be turned into a real TV channel, and the votes on this thread were the deciding factor, are you saying that you'd be willing to give up the priceless commentary on ridiculous infomercials and commercials just because part of the idea, and potentially a very minute part, is already baked?

       I think this has been done : Rob Brydon, a Welsh comic, had a programme on UK TV called "Directors Commentary", see link. I'm resisting the [mfd] tag as I'm not 100% convinced that Rob Brydon's programme is what you're describing.

       [jtg] I note that the show you cited only ran two months before cancellation. Might be an indicator as to how well shows of this nature are going to be received by the general viewing public. But it does sound very like the idea presented.

       [jurist] I watched the odd episode and it was actually rather good. It only ran for 2 months (8 episodes, 8 weeks) because that's a typical series run in the UK. I don't think it's a reflection of its popularity.

       Didn't Comedy Central do this before? I remember watching a State of the Union address given by President Clinton, where improv comics used a 10-second delay to come up with pictures and text to put in thought bubbles that would pop up during his speech. I'm surprised they're not still doing that.

       [jonthegeologist] is right - the idea is baked in "Directors Commentary" although I didn't find the two episodes which I watched particularly funny. There is room for a less subtle/more mainstream version, althought that doesn't make this idea any less baked.
