I joined in during the Epoch of Guns and Capital Punishment. I lived through the Epoch of Superheroes. I was here during the Epoch of Surrealism and the Epoch of Songs. I missed a few Epochs whose names I would not be able to identify, and now I have returned for the Epoch of Traffic.

       Lessee.
I arrived at the dawn of the Ban on Genetic Engineering. That was at the end of the Travel Mug period.
I was there during the Ringing of the Chimes.
I was mired in the Despair of September and wrapped myself in the Age of Self Defense.
I've felt the ebb and flow of the Tides of Noobs, seen the waxing and waning of the Epoch Moon Uses, lurched to the stop and go of Gitchurcar Ovmyroad phases and heard the tick and tock of the Time of Clocks.

The Arrival of Babies coincided strangely with the Era of Three Dimensional Pizza.

       I've survived the Endless Vernon.
I rose to the challenge during the Slice of Bread, dilberted my way through the Office Era and arrived late for Cannibal Time.

And the best I could do was a parking flag. Go figure.
phoenix, Apr 24 2002

Beautiful, phoenix. And it was a darn good parking flag, too.

Wasn't that just after the battle of Sparki - the decisive bout as the halfbakery was emerging from what was to become known as the Ponytail fastener wars?
stupop, Apr 24 2002

I've been around for the Epoch of Traffic, Flight and Other Means Of Transport.
I have seen the Sub-Era of Poetry try to gain momentum but sadly dwindle.
I was previously observing, incognito, the Advent of Sorta Claus,
..and have seen a taster of the havoc that could be wreaked by The Resurgence Of Trolls. Now we only have to wait for a goat to cross a bridge somewhere.
sappho, Apr 24 2002

[phoenix], your record does not adequately reflect your tremendous diplomatic contributions toward maintaining the civility of the board for countless generations of former newbies who grew into fine half-bakers. Now, ambassador phoenix, could you go negotiate the Israeli - Palestinian conflict for us?
RayfordSteele, Apr 24 2002

When I got here it was all scrunchies and toilets. So why did I stay? I wonder if you could graph new users against time and see how the different epochs attracted different people.

Actually, isn't the word "era", an "epoch" being a point in time rather than a timespan?
pottedstu, Apr 25 2002

// all scrunchies and toilets. //

That expression sounds like an actual British colloquialism, like sixes and sevens. It would also make a great bizarre metaphor.

I arrived here during the tail end of the Chilean Sea Bass Era.
waugsqueke, Apr 25 2002

If I might presume to speak for another 'baker. I think that hippo and I would define our tenure as "arrived in the era of the whole 'bakery on a single page" and to have survived, thus far, into the era of "the whole of today's new ideas on a single page". I look forward with trepidation to the era of "the last hour's new ideas on a single page".
DrBob, Apr 25 2002

(Good doctor, if your currently displayed half-birthdate is accurate, I've got one day on you. Of course, you'll just have to take my word for it.)
waugsqueke, Apr 25 2002

Though it _is_ definition #2, here is Merriam-Webster's entry for "epoch":

2 a : an extended period of time usually characterized by a distinctive development or by a memorable series of events b : a division of geologic time less than a period and greater than an age

And I like how it sounds better than "era".
globaltourniquet, Apr 25 2002

so what is less than a period and greater than an epoch?
po, Apr 25 2002

       A comma?  How about "reign?"

Geological: era, period, epoch, series, and episode, in descending length. You can cut any one of them in roughly thirds by adding a modifier, "early," "middle," or "late." (The Chicago Manual of Style)

[gt and I posted our time-period lists at almost the same time. Interestingly, the Manual of Style fails to mention "Eon."]
bristolz, Apr 25 2002

Something that's five and a half letters long?
phoenix, Apr 25 2002

As increasingly smaller units of time, the generally accepted geologic divisions are Eon, Era, Period, Epoch, and Age.

You and your friends are living in the

       Phanerazoic Eon - visible life
Cenozoic Era - mammalian life
Quaternary Period - Human life
Holocene Epoch - civilisation
Information Age - technology
globaltourniquet, Apr 25 2002

Well then 'squekey, you also have a day on beauxeault.
DrBob, Apr 25 2002

[DrBob] <old codger>Those were the days. I remember knowing what all the ideas on the HalfBakery were. Now I'm lucky if I recognise one idea in the recent list.</old codger>
I'm hoping I've lived through the era of "Newbies feeling that the first thing they should do is to post half a dozen ideas to the 'HalfBakery' category"

My joining seemed to coincide with the waning of the Age of Ninja.
Notable epochs might include the Tribulation of Ought Four, The Pimpening, The Time of Reason(s to agree, and Reasons to Disagree), landing us squarely in the post-two-cuppian present of now - it's like it was previously, only it's more recent in this case, a vast improvement.
zen_tom, Feb 01 2008

...and do you remember the era of incomprehensible ideas about engine modifications?
hippo, Feb 01 2008

       More recent ages:

The sailing away of the Captain of the Hullaballoon.
The glory days of Roland.
The mass exodus.
The great void.
The bee and jam plague.
The return of the patriarchs.
The indecipherability of Treon.

Does anyone else remember the Era of Every Idea on the Screen Having a Different Colour Depending on What Category it Belonged To?
hippo, Feb 05 2008

That era is but a legend [hippo] only <i>The Old Ones</i> speak of it, and even then, in hushed and revered tones.

I heard there is a machine, that gifts the user with the ability to go back, WayBack in fact, and glimpse things as they once were. Using such a machine, I have gazed upon the early 'bakery, and seen it as it was in the days before The Help File.
