We've all heard of voice over IP (VoIP) but has it really lived up to the hype? I think not. Instead, I propose a revolutionary inversion of that idea. IPoV, IP over Voice.

In Linux, for example, it would be relatively simple to connect a userspace daemon running a speech synthesizer and a speech recognizer to a tun/tap virtual network interface. Then you would just need to pick a data <--> voice mapping. With simple versions the computers could simply say 'yes no yes no no yes' to each other.

More complex versions map bits to the probability of word pairings in Shakespearan plays, thus the machines talk to each other in dissasociated Bard (aka Shakespearean Markov Encoding).

Once you've got it going your computers with sound card, speakers and microphone can talk to each other in a shared medium (like Ethernet or WiFi). If you don't like the interference caused by a shared medium, chain your computers together with audio cables and you've got an acoustic token ring.

       This reminds me of MaulTunnel (see link) which allows you to tunnel any network traffic through email messages thus effectively routing around any blocked ports on your firewall.

This looks like a sort of "VoiceTunnel".
