Installation Art from the Pacific Garbage Patch

The ultimate recycling project

One of the best pieces of installation art I have seen was made from about 300 plastic water bottles glued together...it looked like a giant soap bubble.

In that regard, I think it would be neat to get a bunch of serious sculptors together and rent a boat. It would have to be a sailboat I think (in the spirit of being eco friendly), and sail through the Great Pacific Garbage Whirl, trawling for floating plastic (and other trash--whatever happens to be out there).

Then take the boatload of garbage and construct sculptures from it. It would make an interesting museum exhibit. It would remove an insignificant amout of trash from the sea..but most importantly it would raise awareness about the garbage buildup in the sea and let people see firsthand sculptures made from the various bits of recycled materials that have floated across the World from all sorts of different places.

I think the sculptors would need to be well known and capable of making very cool art so that it becomes more than just a pile of trash.

The Plastiki [link] would be the suitable sailing vessel - with a hull of 12,500 plastic bottles, it left the Golden Gate March 19, and plans to go through the Pacific Gyre.

+ great idea! I love things made from found objects and cleaning up trash at the same time makes it perfect!
