the irisable part could even be transparent with pretty patterns so it would look like art glass at different dilations.

prior art: there is actually a person named Iris Frisbee online. All my ideas are public domain, yet Iris, whoever she is... May have thought of this first!

       I actually like the idea, but both the disc of a frisbee and the cross section of an aerobie are lifting bodies. Developing an iris that maintains the unitary lifting cross section when fully closed and still forms two independent sections when opened to variable diameters is probably not simple.
