The microphone is wired to the mechanism that advances the spikes. Loud singing retards them; quiet singing or pauses advances them. Sing long and loud, your life depends on it.

Disputed: "retards" implies that the spikes still move, albeit slower. "Retracts" implies them moing away from the singer, which is undesirable. |
