Jump scares are a technique used in horror films where the viewer is startled by something jumping at the camera, often accompanied by a loud noise. This would be the same thing but in book form.

Pop-up books that feature creepy creatures are already a thing, but they work like all popup books, they slowly unfold and you control how they expand from their folded state by how slowly or quickly you open to that page.

This idea is to have spring loaded pop-ups within the pop-ups. So if the story has you walking through a haunted house, graveyard or zombie invested amusement park, some of the pages simply open to show the creepy scene, but every once in a while, as you open the page of the morgue for instance, as the popup unfolds, when it gets to a certain point it releases a spring loaded high speed pop-up of a zombie jumping out at the reader from under a table for instance.

One idea might be a haunted castle with several doors, one containing the surprise. The castle rises slowly as you open to the page, then you start "exploring" by opening door after door knowing that there's an unpleasant monster, demon or zombie that's going to spring out of one of them. Or not, it would be un- predictable.

Picture the pop out spider in the link or the classic Youtube video.

       We forsee serious psychological trauma, particularly for arachnophobic children.

       Striking snakes would be good, too.

       Can there be sound effects ? A little piezo speaker is admittedly a less than perfect device for such a task, but it could manage a sqealing noise as a red-eyed rat leaps at the face of the reader, shirley ?

       Not only could there be snakes, there could be spring loaded snakes in a can style snakes that would actually hit the delighted reader in the face. Those would require re-loading but it would be worth it.

       Now I wouldn't suggest having this feature in books about say "Dealing With Your Serious Heart Condition" because that would be wrong, so very wrong. In fact if anybody would even joke about such a thing I would be mortally offended. In fact I'd be offended if anybody even came up with such a horrible idea.

       That being said, screw the concept of this being in horror books. Put this in books like "Deep Pastorial Daydreams: Prose For Relaxation And Peace. Chapter 1, Butter Putter Flitter Fly" then you open it and a one of those spitter dynosaurs hits you in the face with its poison. (a paper projectile version of it anyway)

       Could have explosive charges
pocmloc, Aug 30 2020

       No reason you couldn't have some fireworks, squirt guns, electrical shocks.

       Really bright flashes too. They don't cause much permanent blindness and could be another feature in this book.

       In fact, if you're willing to take some time you could make this the most horrifying book in history without having to put any thought into stupid story writing.

       "Pastorial Daydreams". I'm going to start on it now, tomorrow at the latest. Next week for sure. No way I won't at least start this sometime next year.

       //require re-loading//
//fireworks, squirt guns//
Nah. All features should be re-set by simply closing the book (may require plastic or metal components if paper/cardboard isn't good enough...).
So spring-loaded pop-outs = reasonably easy. Projectiles etc = not so much.

       Yea, reloading a book does sound like more work that fun.

       Here's an idea, call the book "The Haunted Book". Seriously for a sec, could be a fun kid's book where somebody finds a book that has demons that jump out, that sort of stuff but they never know (with the first read anyway) when something's going to pop out of this book. The story sort of sets them up for what's to come.

       Now if this turns them off to books forever, oh well.

       I foresee another printing of The Pop-Up Book Of Phobias [link] coming soon. (+)

       hmmm, projectiles could be tethered in such a way that spring retraction would occur when the tether reached its end to be reloaded and re-sprung by turning the next page.

       Also there is a video I was watching earlier today about the durability and effectiveness of using compliant ,(or bendy) mechanisms rather than moving parts for just this sort of thing. [link]

       <later edit>
Heh, turns out it was your own earlier link I followed to that video...

       I think we all need a vacation.

       I'm chillin' in Santa Barbara next week. I'm done thinking for a while. Anybody care to join me we'll be on the beach. Drinks are on me.

       //Drinks are on me//
Hmm, they're better in a cup... easier clean-up too.
neutrinos_shadow, Aug 31 2020

       Yeah. Shave your belly button already if you expect us to drink from it.

       I would have loved a book like this growing up. Shoot, I'd love one now come to think about it. + (BTW, I lived in SB for several years. Worked at Cottage Hospital and ate veggie food on State Street. That was 40 years ago. Hahaha)
blissmiss, Aug 31 2020

       Nice. I'm stuck in high tech Silicon Valley because of what I do for a living, but about the same time you were in SB, I was south of you trying to eek out a living as a studio session keyboard player. That was before I made my real move into the music biz, by dumping the keyboards for one thing. Ahh to be a young, dirt poor feral studio musician again.

       Actually that would suck. Never mind.
