Take two flat panels with the typical liquids for a lava lamp in between. Instead of a lamp install a row of heated nozzles at the bottom (5 per digit). A microprocessor controls the nozzles to release dot like blobs of the lava. By activating the nozzles in the right sequence dot-matrix like digits can be generated that float up in the lava clock. Since all digits move up even the hour digits have to be "written" repeatedly. The clock should be at least two lines tall so there is always a complete digit visible. At the top is a small rotating blade that chops up the blobs into much smaller pieces so they don't disturb the picture when they sink back to the bottom.
