Modern DaVincis

A show where latter day Leonardo DaVincis show off inventions LD himself might have thought of.

Using materials and technology from DaVinci's time, contestants would create inventions along the lines of the skipping disk catapult invented by Bungston and demonstrate them.

Leo designed an ancient Roomba with clockwork gears that actually turned corners and followed pre-programmed paths so there's lots that can be done with the technology and material of the day. Viewers would call in their votes for coolest invention.

Beauty and craftsmanship would count.

Winners would have a cash prize granted to me in their name.

I like the idea, but don't know the plural of Da Vinci. Also, the last sentence is stupid. [+]

"DaVinci" pronounced with a hard "i" perhaps?

//Also, the last sentence is stupid.//

       Yea, can't argue with that.

Hey, it worked for the Medici family for a long time.
RayfordSteele, Sep 26 2011

//it worked for the Medici family// So did Leonardo.

Yeah, but he was just a turtle.

I would consider attending a Renaissance fair if it filled the expo hall with the apparatuses (apparati?) such inventors. [+]

I've often wanted to see someone make a working model of that helicopter of his. I don't know that it would be possible with materials from that day and age though.

2 fries - there are a number of kits available to build models of DaVinci's 'helicopter' prototype.

I have built one, and it works.

The issue is in what is meant by 'works'.

It is believed that the design was for a device to illustrate the principle of generating lift by rotation of a helical surface, but not to fly as such. In this respect, the device works.

       Back to the idea... (+)

So, basically this is a Halfbakery television series...

Yes, but the 15th century version.

Pretty sure the plural is actually Leonardos da Vinci, since Vinci is a placename rather than a last name.

What is so special about this fellow DaVinci? Submitted to a medieval Halfbakery, his ideas would have been torn to shreds by you lot. He was far too shrewd to any allow such scrutiny. Take his portrayal of the Last Supper. Here was this Jesus character, labouring vigorously at washing the Disciples feet beforehand (and pretty pingy they would have been too), just so the boys would look presentable for the sitting, DaVinci turns up late, a few hundred years after the event in fact and decides to paint from memory. The result, a right rough looking bunch of scruffs lulling about, committing the Cardinal sin of wearing their Birkenstocks indoors. I bet their mothers had something to say to them about that and told them to tidy up their act. Also, he wasn't even smart enough to invent the Cuckoo clock, or fish and chips.

"Yeah okay, [Davinci]. What is this 'Armoured Car' made out of anyway, and how are the horses supposed to pull such a heavy contraption?"
RayfordSteele, Oct 03 2011

Well, it worked fine with slave power. Quite economical really. Only uses two hundred disposable slaves per mile. Must improve the braking system for hill work. Might try the new air vented disc type, rock brakes under the wheels.
