Your PIN must be entered in a certain rhythm, although it allows for leeway (maybe you could set your own rhythm and leeway). It doesn't matter whether it is fast or slow, just that it is close to your chosen rhythm.

"keystroke dynamics" http://www.google.c...ystroke+dynamics%22
fairly baked for computer authentication [krelnik, Oct 04 2004]

Sign on ATM: "Due to technical difficulties, please press PIN number at 120 BPM"

Looks like my 'random generic PIN # idea' post produced some fruit...

Ah, but what about ATM Card thieves with sharp hearing (and perfect pitch).....

I want the ATM to be playing Ian Dury when you approach it.

Ignition immobilisers in cars use a comparable method, sort of... If you lose you immobiliser key, you have to input a four digit number to the device. However, the only way to do this is to insert the key, turn it, wait for the light to flash X times, turn the key off, repeat for next number...

My step-sister learnt this when she lost her (immobiliser) key. It took her about a minute to start her car, because she kept going past the number she wanted, and had to start over.

Peticelli, the ATM need not play sounds, simply require rhythmic input.

This is really pretty baked as a biometric authentication mechanism, but I don't know if anyone has applied it to an ATM yet. The folks in that field usually use the term "keystroke dynamics". See link.

I have a friend who has a mild form of Cerebral Palsy. He's a great guitarist but has a very... uh... "dislocated" sense of rhythm (in everything, not just the guitar). He plays with the band no problem, but when playing on his own, his phrasing is all over the place. To input his PIN correctly he'd need the drummer with him.

[kmlabs] I think I see a boom in sales of electronic metronomes.
