Ahhh! The smell of freshly popped popcorn in the morning!

It is well known that when you mix certain chemicals, an exergonic reaction occurs. That means that it releases energy.

Now, they have those self heating cans, don't they? Well, we should put that stuff in a popcorn bag (sealed, of course), crack it, and let the popcorn pop itself!

       c'est bon.

Pretty doable - we've now got self-heating coffee cans. But I regard popcorn as one of the evils of the modern world, so I'm afraid I am withholding my croissant.

       DrCurry, EVILS?!?!

Popcorn is NOT modern. It was invented by the native americans over 2000 years ago!

       Definitely NOT modern.

       Besides, popcorn is tasty.
DesertFox, May 22 2004

[bliss] Oh yeah, DrC is confused with Elvis or is it elves often at the HB, either way, he deserves a little abuse for dissing popcorn. so desertfox you get my +

Be good for camping. Almost everyone loves popcorn and I'm sure that DrCurry must have been having a migraine or something when he cast aspersions upon such a favorite snack.

       A fine idea.

Anyone have any idea of the BTUs required to pop a given volume of corn? And the BTU capacity of those self-heating doohickeys?
Gromit, May 22 2004

Donknow about no BTU's nor care but you put some old fashioned black powder between the outer and inner cans and a hand grenade style ring to pull the cover that meanwhile lights a fuse. FUUUSSSHHH! Instant pop corn hand grenade.

       Ah! Popcorn flavored doughnut.

It would be even craftier to create an exothermic reaction inside the kernel, then initiate it via exposing the kernel to some kind of inducer.
Cuit_au_Four, Feb 08 2008

So perhaps through some genetic engineering, you can create corn that produces a biological exothermic chemical via photosynthesis. Then you can create a biological reactant in a labratory and package that with the dried corn into a solid cube-shaped mass. Use a large rock to shatter the innards of the package and get instant popping!
