Shielded pucellas

Pucellas (poo-CHAY-uhs) have been around for close to 1,000 years and have been virtually unchanged during those years. They can be used for either “necking” or for opening a piece of molten glass. I have used them myself and found them adequate except when making open pieces of glass. During the process of opening, much heat is released and the arm must come dangerously close to the molten glass. The average lifespan for a shirt was 5 open pieces before it was destroyed from the heat. The effect is generally similar to placing your arm into the oven in your home during the “clean” cycle.

Now, imagine the guard on a fencing foil, which is essentially a shallow cup. This cup is cut in half, across, and each corresponding half is welded to mid-point of the pucellas with the cup facing the artist. The pucellas can still be brought together without any difficulty, but the heat would be effectively radiated away from the artist’s wrist and arm.

       this started me thinking about ass-blowing techniques and safety devices. it has been a long and colourful tradition for young men to experiment with the playful and it must be said often drunken attempts to ignite their own intestinal gases. these experiments often end in tears. the gases themselves are composed of hydrogen and oxygen and sometimes methane. it is a little known fact that the flame containing methane is blue and the methaneless flame is yellow. I do hope I have not encouraged any half-bakers to experiment along these lines but knowing Klaatu as I do, a safety device is just up his alimentary canal as it were.
