I have problems with this:
(1) Where compulsory, S&T seems to promulgate, albeit implicitly, the clearly erroneous position that each person has something worthwhile to share with his or her peers. Where voluntary, S&T gives platform to the tediously self-absorbed or self-aggrandising (viz. those who have internalised the lessons of compulsory S&T).
(2) Like a goodly proportion of individuals in the services sector, I attend weekly videolinked conferences where (in my case) lawyers spend untold minutes appraising their reflexively indolent colleagues of some technical wizard- or bollock-ry or transactional whizzbangery, all in the name of "knowledge exchange". Adding to that burden by making me hear what Print Room Drone #3 has been doing to keep himself gently amused in his shed will push me - and thousands like me - into a seething frenzy of tutting and eye-rolling. |

Yeeeessss... - I'm reminded of those 'ice-breaker' exercises that facilitators are keen to force groups of people who don't normally work together to do in the mistaken belief that this will break down all social barriers and norms between members of the group and fill everyone with a spirit of cooperation and camaraderie. For example "Write down one interesting thing about yourself on a piece of paper and then we'll see if we can guess which thing relates to each person" - which quickly reveals that many people don't have an interesting thing they can say about themselves. |

... or perhaps more charitably, that many people have interesting things to say about themselves but are precluded from doing so by their good manners, as the interesting things involve base or deviant acts which are best left undescribed. |

others dullards who wouldn't be interested by the
