You could have thought of that.

This looks like a clip-on necktie (with a possibly a slightly larger knot). There is a stiff rod down the tie, acting like a robotic arm, controlled by the motor in the knot. In one pocket there is a power pack, and the other a GPS. The GPS controls the motor. When you stagger outside at closing time and realise that you can't remember where you are or how to get home you activate the device which springs to life (I haven't quite worked out how you can do this in your disgraceful state). The tie leaps up and points the way home. To an outsider it would look like an invisible hand pulling you home by the tie.

Sorry, but this was the first thing I thought of. [MikeD, Nov 24 2008]

Annotation:

Manufacturers of car GPS devices could use your idea. The driver doesn't eed to look at the GPS screen or listen, but just follow the rod.

..... unless you drive straight past your destination and the tie whirls round and stabs you in the throat ......

[+] Use a breathalyzer to activate the device. If you put the device lower and it activated you could probably get some nice young lady to take you home. "Is that an EPS in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

And if you stagger in a circle, you could be garroted by your necktie. I like it.

Awesome. Can it feature an glove of my wife's hand?

No, in much the same way as a parasite organism will leave a dying host, as you near death the tie will untie itself from your neck and slither away, looking for a new host and homing in on the nearest healthy neck...
