Incidentally, why isn't "spacecraft" another word for "interior design"?

The USA is extremely fortunate that they have the use of the Guantanamo Bay site, allowing undesirables to be squirreled away safe from the prying gaze of do-gooders, journalists, politicians and pansy pinko hand-winging liberals bleating about human rights.

But Britain does not have such a location.

Yet.

It would be good to have somewhere to put those of questionable loyalty and dubious motives, where they can be stored in controlled conditions and asked difficult questions until bits drop off their bodies.

Ideally, such a place would be barren, utterly isolated and inaccessible, effectively uninhabited, and a valueless desolate wasteland.

However, Norwich City Council have raised the usual objections.

But their remains South Georgia. <link>, a little bleak lump of rock in the south Atlantic. Best of all, "the European Convention on Human Rights does not apply".

Now, Common Law might ... but if the island is declared a UK Sovereign Base, then it comes under the Army Act, which trumps just about everything.

All that's needed are a few flatpacked sheds for the inmates and a shipload of concrete, posts, and razor wire. Accommodation for the staff would of course be of the most luxurious kind.

No more expensive court hearings, no more judicial reviews, and a few days of living off raw penguin should rapidly convince any waverers to either spill the beans or die.

Sorry it's not clear in the idea. Are you suggestion that South Georgia is a suitable bleak and dispiriting place for the UK to use as a prison camp, or the other way around?

Unlikely to work ... when the detainees saw what it's like outside the wire, they'd be happy to stay - and the indigenous life-forms would be trying to get in all the time.

I had suggested Hull as a most suitable site for such an endeavour, but it got deleted. Hull for those who don't know it, won the Crap Towns contest a few years ago, by a substantial margin. The lining of a cistern has more going for it than Hull.
xenzag, Dec 06 2015

Here's a quote about Hull from a Crap Towns submission: "Hull smells of death," he said, before suggesting that "on Judgment Day the town should be leased out to Satan, to provide housing for the damned". Actually my own town isn't much better, and Hull never had any death squads, whilst most of those I grew up with ended up as paramilitaries. So, not so much a crap town as scaring the crap out of everyone.

Apologies to [xen] for the accidental deletion, and the resultant swiss cheese ...

Is a cistern in Hull best described as double-hulled?

       "their remains" suggest wishful thinking?

You're meant to press the sweet into their palm and pat them on the head.

No way. That one bites, best to throw it into the enclosure from a distance.
