Cattle are to be birthed and raised in the low-gravity environment of a rotating space station. The amount of artificial gravity should be high enough so that the cattle do not end up emaciated and lacking muscle, but low enough so that they live a lifestyle with significantly less stress than they would experience as terrestrial mammals. In addition to organic grain, the cattle are also fed beer while they receive massages and classical music serenades. After they have been raised, they are transferred via a rocket-cattle-car to an orbital abattoir for slaughter. Finally, the carcasses are delivered to earth in a refrigerated compartment of a space shuttle.

This idea would be an excellent challenge for a start-up spaceflight company.

ISS has a lettuce garden. 10 months in, no results reported yet. [lurch, Feb 15 2015]

Has anyone grown grass in orbit yet?

If they have, then I wonder why the ISS doesn't have a garden, if only to reprocess CO2 back into O2.

Cows don't eat grain, they eat grass. Perhaps you are thinking of locusts?
pocmloc, Feb 15 2015

I like this but ramp up those Gs. These Heavyworld steers will ripple with excess salable muscle!
bungston, Feb 15 2015

But the lightworld cows will produce creamier milk.

Why not just place into decaying orbit all the carnivorous idiots who eat meat? That way, world food shortages are ended, as is 90% of global warming and us much smarter vegetarians can watch the nightly "meteor showers of the idiots" as we like to call them. (relaxes with a beer and a vege burger - non Frankenstein Agent Orange GM version of course)

I think you probably mean "omnivorous".

//Why not just place into decaying orbit all the carnivorous idiots who eat meat?//

Hear hear! That would leave more room for us carnivorous smart people to grow more beef - which is wasted on idiots. Well said, [xen].

Incidentally, have they figured out how to make vege burgers without using panda rennet yet?
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 15 2015

       LOL NON-VEGANS AMIRITE

You get rid of the worst offenders and celebrate!

       //relaxes with a beer//

Wait, you realize that the beer is conspicuous consumption right? For the same environmental impact you could have much more effective use of the grain by consuming it unprocessed. The bottle/can, those useless hops, the whole transport network.... just so much waste. Once the meat eaters are gone, the holier-than- thou puritan crowd will be looking for a new target. Beer drinkers will be right up there... and you're eating a veggie burger. Tut tut. Those veggies could have been eaten unprocessed. They'll be shooting into space all those who eat more than gruel.

Never mind beer. Try getting people off coffee.

Grass-fed beef cows eat grass. If cows will eat corn, then I'm sure they can eat grain.

First they came for the people who ate meat, and I did nothing, because I did not eat meat.

Then they came for the people that drank beer, and I did nothing, because I did not drink beer.

Then they came for the people that drink coffee, and I did nothing, because I did not drink coffee.

Then they came for the people that write these silly sayings, and I

X beyond the frontier was the first pc game to have beef farms, wheat farms and bakery in space. They were used to make crystals, crystals to make energy cell. All factories needed energy cells. Space based farming sounds great. We just need a shield generator or all that beef will mutate and you may get two headed Brahman.
