A bar where the prices of drinks/snacks etc vary depending on demand. Point of Sale tills would feed a simple computer model to calculate dynamic prices that could be displayed on a ticker tape display

Idea is that this is a piece of fun, a gimmick aimed at getting customers in the door than a serious trading place.

If I anticipate a rush at 6pm on Friday night, can I buy drink futures earlier in the day to try and get a good price? Or could I arbitrage drinks with those in a less-popular bar?

viz. my anno on 'Restaurant Light' topic, 6 Sept 2002:

Maybe restaurants should have a "customers please" light, outside. Especially if they had a fully-flexible meal tariff. Marqueeing on a red LED screen in the window: "...the 'Lutyens' meal, 2-pers., Chk. Korma, Prawn Madras, Veg. Dhans., On. Bhaj., Pops, 2 Naan, 2 Pints Cobra, now retailing $26.95... $24.95..." 'Quick, MarySue, hurry up! It's bottoming out!'

Are they by any chance related?

Baked at Leicester Students union (and presumably others around the country.) Its called Bar FTSE. Every so often they set up screens all round the bar with the prices of the drinks on like a stock index. These constanly fluxuate.

For them its a great way of keeping the bar busy all night, and ensuring people get drunk quicker (and hence buy more higher priced drinks later on) Say you've just bought a nice pint of guiness and are anout 1/3 of the way through it, if you look up and see the Guiness price has suddenly dropped to £1.00 your going straight back to the bar to get another, then you've got 1 2/3s pints infront of you and are going to drink that much faster.

It gets tricky when they drop the price of something popular, everyone rushes the bar, but by the time you get to the front its risen to an all time high. Presumably (I've not seen this happen) this could lead to people who've just bought up a lot of pints at the front of the queue selling them on for a tidy profit to those behind them. Hmmm. I'm having an idea......

As good as an idea as this it has been baked many times over. The first i came accross it was back in the UK in 1994, and now i am hosting a stock market night at my local in Feb 07. Atleast you are thinking along the right lines.
