It struck me just recently, in going through my oarent's collection of photos, that genealogy had much in common with modern intelligence methods. In particular, putting together cause from metadata. Close such as the frame numbers on negatives can be used to order events. Matching up pictures with letters my Mom transcribed can really bring the past to life.

A book by a former intelligence officer on how to apply (non- classified) techniques from the intelligence world to locating your ancestors would probably find a large audience.

Coming from a lineage whose ancestors get two entire chapters in the Domesday Book, plus a separate, private version of the Magna Carta, sealed by the King, the Pope, the Holy Roman Emperor and the Archimandrite of Constantinople, that's pretty good.

In some biblical texts, now suppressed because they are unsuitable for the easily offended, those with weak hearts, the elderly, children, young horses of a nervous disposition and sensetive Scots Guardsmen, it's fascinating to read that just after "The Land God Gave To Cain" there's a set of title deeds to what has subsequently become the Buchanan family estates ...

I read this as 'The NASA guide to genealogy' and was all excited to find out which planet my ancestors really came from.

       so disappointed...

// which planet my ancestors really came from. //

Sure as hell weren't Krypton ... tell you that for free.

//a lineage whose ancestors get two entire chapters in the Domesday Book// Yes but, to be fair, those chapters were mostly lists of charges.

With my luck it was probably Pluto.

       Either him or Goofy.
