Minimum wages for Congressional Freshmen (or Freshwomen) | |
In order to provide a fine example that minimum wages
are indeed livable, perhaps all new Congresspeoples should
be paid at that scale. Perhaps they should also be given
Medicaid benefits rather than private health insurance.
Perhaps then we might see a sudden rise in the minimum
wage and a
decent national health system.

We have a political party that requiers the senators to give their wages to the party and the party then pays a much reduced fee to the senator. The rest is paid to charity. |

There is a school of thought that minimum wages aren't a good idea at all. Is it better for someone to be unemployed than underpayed? In practise, increases to the minimum wage rarely cause many redundancies, but this may be because politicians do occasionally consult economists before acting. |

Link their paychecks to the minimum wage and the minimum wage will be set far too high, resulting in unemployment. Anyway, it would be simpler and easier to get the politicians to increase the minimum wage as far as desired, rather than pledge to be among the lowest paid employees in the nation. |

I've been thinking that. In fact I suspect that's the reason why their paychecks are as modest as they are. If they voted themselves the sort of paychecks that CEO's get, CEO's would run for government and probably win power. When the US national debt is $10 trillian, a party of people that make money rather than accumulate debt looks rather good. |
