Zombie Idea Limiter

Let the rotting corpses of old ideas rest in peace...

At the risk of annoying the bakesperson, I humbly offer the following...

Make old ideas less buoyant than new ones. Currently, new ideas are kept afloat by frequent annotations. I propose that as the frequency drops, ideas should become heavier and more difficult to hoist back to the top of the "recently annotated" lists. Any idea more than X days old would require Y posts in a week before crossing the zombie threshold. I suggest a period of 30 days before sinking, and 3-5 posts in a week to before reanimation.

Justification: Currently, anyone who annotates an old thread runs the risk of rekindling old feuds or reanimating zombies best left to rot. In this scheme, several people would have to pick up on an old idea before it floated back to the top of the HB brew.

The simplicity of the way the Halfbakery works at present is very appealing.

oh let me rekindle an old fued, just one, please...

You could extend this to allow people to order ideas not merely chronologically or by rating, but by a complex metric like:

       age*0.2 + positivevotes*0.4 + recentannotations*0.3 - mentionsofvaginajam*0.6

Hours of fun (although personally I just want every website in the world to implement SQL querying).

Old ideas are just as valid as new ones. I disagree strongly with the zombie characterization.

Set up your Recent Page filter to exclude any ideas older than your personal Sell by date, and you'll never see them again.

//Set up your Recent Page filter...//

How the heck do you do that?
pluterday, Mar 31 2003

click on recent and then again on edit at the top of the page and then..... well its a mystery to me but if you mess about you might be lucky...

       Ahhh, thanks!

To accommodate Mr Quixote's desires, you'd check the first set of options.

[x] Filter by time: show only ideas that have been
[x]created
since
[XX] [days] ago

... with XX being how many days old you want to see. This will blind you to all of that old evil stuff and make the world a more peaceful place.

While you're at it, you can also...

[x] Filter by author: show only ideas [not by ^]
[waugsqueke]

Save you a lot of heartburn, that one.

       ommmmmmmmmmmm

       [hippo] Agreed, simplicity is good.

[waugsqueke] Also agreed, old ideas are valid, some of the very oldest ones are my favorites.

I don't want to prevent old ideas from *ever* coming back to the top, I'm suggesting that ideas might cross a threshold of activity before leaping to the head of the top-3 activity lists.
Don Quixote, Mar 31 2003

some of the new ones are - how do I say this politely - not very creative or original.
po, Mar 31 2003

[po] Agreed. There are some ideas I'd not miss if they sank and stayed sunk. Just my opinion, of course.

A conundrum presents itself. If the collected bakers reject this idea, nothing prevents it from rising up and shambling through the bakery, annoying those who have already fishboned it. On the other hand, if this idea is implemented, even if widely fishboned, it would effectively suppress itself - after a period of time it would sink, and only a concerted effort would bring it back to life.
Don Quixote, Mar 31 2003

Hmm. I have been thinking about this and I've come to the conclusion that I am against it, for a number of reasons.
1. The formulation in the idea means that it will be incredinbly rare for old ideas to float back up - ideas can only burst up if they accumulate X annos (where X > 1) but ideas that don't reach the top will not get these required annos. Catch-22.
2. I'm against filtering anything.
3. I like it when one of my old ideas rises unbidden and wouldn't want to deprive anyone that pleasure.
4. The views option is mint (not MINT, though) and makes this idea unecessary.
5. Old ideas are an excellent learning tool and hold some incredibly interesting comments and points. They should, I reckon, remain visible.

Hm. Don Quixote shows up and suddenly there's a surge of windmill ideas.
waugsqueke, Mar 31 2003

I think this idea is cruel. Zombies have a hard enough time figuring things out. They get hung up on barbed wire and spend days trying to figure out why they can't walk right. DQ, I would like to see a zombie idea _enhancer_, maybe like a personal organizer or an abacus. Use your skills for good instead of evil.
bungston, Mar 31 2003

Yes, we must only use our powers for good.

Don Q, I am now resurfacing all the weird, old ideas i can find just to spite you
igirl, Mar 31 2003

Yikes! Unhorsed by a particularly resilient windmill…

Having considered the responses, [my face your] and [bliss]'s in particular, I concede the point. Plus I’m having fun watching [igirl] choose ideas to reanimate.
Don Quixote, Apr 01 2003

Not being the bakesmistress, or being possessed of her skills or extrodinary range of knowledge, I wouldn't know if it's practical to do, but.........how about letting the old ideas rise and shamble, but weighting them so they sink faster than new ideas ?

Then if there was truly interest or new meat on the bones, they could remain a-shamble, and if not they would soon be able to rest again.
