Simply attach this device to your coventional plug socket. Then text a code from your mobile phone and- HEY PRESTO- warm bed when you walk in the door! No more ice cold winter sheets.

Can be used with to any plug-in appliance- eg hot kettle on arrival- BINGO!

Will also be turn off in a similar fashion.

Welcome to the HB, [alfonse] ... I dunno ... I do so enjoy warming up those sheets from frigid to snuggly warm on my own ... but this sounds like something very enjoyable! [+]

I think there is a great idea here if you broadened it out a bit. How about a "remote socket" device which would plug into your wall-socket and into which another electrical device would be plugged. The "remote socket" would be like a conventional timer - which switches on the power to the plugged-in device at a specified time - however it would differ because it would be activated by the reciept of an SMS message containing a key word and the word "ON" (and off again if the extra word is "OFF"). You could dot these about your house/business and use them to activate/de-activate devices at will. You could allocate different keywords to each unit. In this way your conventional electric blanket becomes "remote-enabled" and you also come home to a kettle just on the boil, the TV warmed up and ready-to-entertain, the PC booted up ready to check the half-bakery etc. (+)

[dot] that requires a whole new posting, shirley? I'll await it, and croissant it when you half-bake it!

I like it in theory, but it also just screams "fire hazard" to me.

Might be interesting for your pets.

Adjusting the heat on an electric blanket could come in handy when you get too hot or cold in winter. The only down side is power outages from those dreaded Ice storms.
