About 30 miles from the eye here, scary at times, a
couple of trees fell, but all good, running a generator
now. After Irene I had no power for 5 days, hope
this doesn't beat the record. |

The city is practically shut down, incredible |

trees down, lawn-furniture on walkabout; after the power went with less than a minute to go in the suspense program I was watching, went to a part of the city that still had power and bought 100 tea-candles, since I couldn't find the ones I'm sure I have, somewhere, in the dark. |

I had to eat an earlier smug comment, having forgotten that the n.g. furnace has a mains' fan. Spent awhile in penance distributing pots and pans full of hot water from the n.g. heater which kept on chugging away in blissful ignorance of the maelstrom outside. Reminder to self to poke a hole in the wall for the generator and look into a UPS for the telly. |

We only caught the fringe: city's a bit trashed; the power's out for another couple days some areas; quite a few traffic lights are out but non-rush-hour traffic isn't affected much despite the odd banged-up car on the side of the road; the public school board closed 15 schools, the other, to their staff and students' ephemeral dismay, couldn't be bothered; awaiting a few days of flooding as Sandy continues to sideswipe the area, and I now have 97 tea candles in a bag to move from shelf to shelf until I toss them out or repurpose them. |

Fortunately, we Mainers are hardy folk who own lanterns
and chainsaws and are able to go without power for hours
at a stretch. Our thoughts and heathen prayers go out to
