A game where you ride buses

First-person adventure game, except you can't drive, so you travel by bus.

The game world would have a working bus network with a number of routes, each running to timetables. To get from A to B you'd need to plan a route and ride buses. Each bus stop would have a little screen showing you how long until the next bus arrives (they'd be much more regular than in real life to keep the game moving). The focus of the game would be on stopping, thinking, and planning before you act, so it might work for a cozy kind of game. It'd also be kinda speedrunnable - this whole idea came to me because I was imagining a speedrunner stood at a bus stop yelling for a bus to turn up.

Kind of like Jetlag, but simulated?

They sell a version you can play with your friends on a smaller scale, now - I'm sure you could do it on busses rather than trains, assuming a decent public transport system.

When I was a bit younger we used to play a game where you ride girls..... still do it, only there's less players now hahahaha

There’s a thriller’s plot in there somewhere. It’s the Orient Express on public transport. Where’s Richard Pryor when you need him?

xen, i’m sure you meant ‘fewer’ players. (insert mean laugh)

On the London Underground, there is a world record for being able to travel around all the stations in the shortest possible time. There are various sub-challenges too. I've participated in a few and know a worrying amount of current and former record holders. It's essentially human speed-running.

There are lots of subtleties at play. For instance, going to Kensington Olympia. It's only open at weekends and has a very limited service even at those times. And it's on its own branch line with no other stops. So when you're doing a run and arrive at Earls Court, if you see an Olympia-bound train on the platform, it's a good idea to get it. There are other stations where and above-ground interchange (on foot) is quicker. Which carriage do you get on, in order to be closest to the exit at your destination, etc, etc.

So yeah, I can see some fun in this as a game. Buses for version 1.0, maybe the Tube for a later edition?
