Simple enough - an augmented reality smartphone app allowing individuals or teams to play Monopoly around central London. Ownership, houses, hotels all overlaid on the street scene. Ideal for a long summer's afternoon.

Paris, New York, Sydney, Beijing versions also available.

If I land on Trump Tower, do I go directly to jail, go bankrupt, or get all of the cash in the middle?
RayfordSteele, Sep 13 2017

If you land on Trump Tower, I think the most likely outcome is that you get arrested, just as soon as the cops reach the roof.

       We forsee a problem.

As an example, Oxford Street is 1.9 km long.

Now, comparing the dice with the square on the board, the ratio of the faces to the "street" is, very roughly, six.

So, if the dice for the game are to anything like scale, they need to be about 630m along each edge.

The dice provided with the set have a density of about 2. So each one, at full scale, is going to weigh about 500 million tonnes.

You're going to need a bigger cup.

       That's what he said.

That's no problem - we can generate virtual 630m dice and a virtual 3km-high cup to suit?

Seeing the dice thundering around the horizon might be the only visual clue to the presence of other players, most of the time...

Back when Foursquare was starting there were a bunch of startups that tried to do location based games with Monopoly in mind.

There one I linked went through about 35M before going bankrupt. The latest AR phones make this more plausible, but really until a glasses form factor arrives it'll always have a somewhat limited appeal, I'm afraid. But those may not be too far out
theircompetitor, Sep 14 2017

They spent $35M on an game which requires no physical items, runs on hardware most people have in their pocket, and could, quite plausibly, run without any significant back-end server hardware?

What on earth did they do with it?

[edit] They lost $35M at Monopoly. The irony.

To be realistic, when you start the game and go round the 'board' representing London, all the properties should be way more than you can afford and, of course, already purchased by a Russian billionaire
hippo, Sep 15 2017

You're right. Maybe the properties need to sit on a much larger circle, where prices aren't quite so steep. You could charge 4x the total shown on the dice for landing on Watford Gap services. Railway stations could be Reading, Luton Airport Parkway, Clapham Junction and, oh, I don't know, Shenfield.
