Auto-Refresh of the "Recent" page

Ladies and Gentlemen (and other miscreants who fall into neither category);

The internet age has made me - and I hope I'm not alone in this - a lazy, lazy person. It's made me so lazy that I don't even really want to press F5 or the refresh button on my web browser any longer.

That aside, I was thinking that it would be rather interesting to bash about the idea of having the "Recent" page auto-refresh.

Rather than clicking every 5 or 10 minutes to see what has changed, it shouldn't be too hard to have a profile option to choose how often the recent page refreshes automatically. That means you can have it sit in the background, churning over, so that when you get back from your real work the 'bakery shows you the most recent posts and annotations (or if you're the type who sits back with a book and reads updates ideas and anno's like myself it allows you to read and glance up occasionally to see if anything has changed)

       I regard lack of refresh as a good thing. If you refresh the recent list and it hasn't changed then you really should do something else for a bit.

       The Windows active desktop does this if you set your windows desktop to the halfbakery home page and specify an auto-refresh. So easy... (Note: I have never tried this.)

       An alternative: get a news reader program that can take RSS, and let it tell you when there is something new at the bakery. See the links on the idea I linked for details.   

       One thing not mentioned there (I think because it didn't exist then) is you can now configure any of your "views" to spit itself out as RSS. Thus you could configure a news reader to get a very specific slice of the bakery. Click [edit] at the top of any view, such as the bakery home page, and scroll to the bottom for the "Show these ideas as" section.

       Don't look at me. Ok, tell you what - copy and paste the following text into a text document, save it as recent.htm and open it. I don't know if it'll work in anything but IE, but it feels pretty good to bake an idea (though it's not one I voted for).

       [Worldgineer] Problem there is that would have a similar effect as a DDOS attack, should enough people do it.   

       I didn't want that to happen and was hoping that there might be a way to do it without causing that effect to the servers.

       [ravenswood] I would, but sadly the IS division here at work (where I have a 6mb/second connection. Yay!) has cut off access to a large number of internet sites.   

       To date at least I have work access here - that there are almost no graphics helps - and hence here I am. I do visit other sites when able (smh, reuters, etc) but this is the only page with a format like this that I am able to access.

       If you download Firefox (a new browser), you can get an extension for it that will do this for you. Just set the page to reload every 5 minutes or so. Google on "Firefox" and "firefox extensions" to find out where to download it from.
