Boredom Browser

Never get 'stuck' on the internet again.
  [vote for,

One thing I really hate about the internet is the way I get totally stuck when I can't think of anywhere I really want to browse, so I just sit there bored with my default homepage open.

Perhaps a browser add-on could monitor your most frequently visited sites and search for similar when you're not using any/much bandwidth?

You could have some kind of annoying Clippit style 'assistant' that pops up. "I notice you're just trawling through the same bookmarked sites over and over again. Would you like to visit a) www.halfbakery.com b) www.sitekindoflikehalfbakery.com c) hardcoresluts.com ?"

There would have to be some sort of filtering to help match the sites to your tastes and keep out nasty stuff like example c) above, but by Googling intelligenly it could probably come up with the goods.

I'm sure that there's some sort of dodgy spyware that does something like this already, but it's not oriented to the user's real needs. The Boredom Browser thinks only of you, and that time you've got to kill between 4pm and 5pm when at work.

Well there it is. http://www.stumbleupon.com/
Sounds like a good idea, anyway... [absterge, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 06 2004]

The problem with this is it would surely inherently work along the lines of spyware. Or you would get bombarded with popups for Hot Swedish Lesbian XXXXX Action which crash your browser completely when you try to close them. However if such a program as you describe is possible without such annoyances then I would be among the first to get it.

Why not follow a few hyperlinks and have your friends do the same? Put each site visited into a folder in your favorites and then e-mail the folder to each friend to see cool sites. There are numerous 'ring' sites that you can follow for days on end and never get bored.

I can e-mail my "Hot Sleezy Porno" folder to anyone interested. (Don't get overly excited guys. One man's porno is another man's "page after page of airplane sites")

The phenomenon you describe in the opening paragraph leads me to suggest you make an effort to acquire a life. Get away from the computer and go interact with other humans, preferably out-of-doors.

In the old days (i.e., before Google), Yahoo used to be pretty good for finding quality sites that matched your interests.

This device could slave your browser to somebody else who was actively browsing. There would then be a sort of voyeuristic pleasure as well.

That actually exists, it's called "Stumble Upon" and works as a toolbar with specifics topics you select, such as Astronomy, Stand up comedy, or radio shows. As far as I know, there's nothing close to a spyware in it, as it is anonymous. Lookup for Stumble Upon in google if you're interested.

[waugs], respectfully, he's apparently just bored for a single hour a day, when he's still obliged to be at work, but with nothing exactly to do until the horn blows at 5. I identify, but cannot bun if such a thing as Stumble Upon actually exists, alas.
