How to make a reserve and live in it?

One often hears about going back to basics, like starting a little farm and being more self-sufficient. Why not go even further.

Live the life before there was agriculture!

So how to do it?

1. Buy some cheap arable land, like Romania (2000 euro/ha)

2. Weed it or ask a farmer to weed it.

3. Wait a couple of weeks. New seedlings will emerge. Weed it again.

4. Scatter seeds of a variety of perennial or self-seeding edible plants. Make sure there are no poisonous look-a-likes.

5. Build an insulated shelter.

6. Plant some trees for short and long term lumber.

7. Plant some fruit trees and berry shrubs.

8. Make sure you have a source of water. Collect rain water or build a well.

9. Buy a pot and perhaps make a solar oven.

10. Invite some people to live on your reserve with you.

11. Gather some food together. Cook it on a fire or with a solar oven.

12. Enjoy your new life.

There you have it. Almost complete self-sufficiency. It would probably be a very small reserve. But of course, one doesn't have to restrict oneself to the reserve.

Baked since the Neolithic, I would have thought, apart from the bit where you buy part of Romania. Also possibly the enjoying part, although everything's relative.

The reserve will be bigger than you think. The hunter-gatherer lifestyle requires a significant number of hectares per person, to host enough food, partly because an ecosystem usually includes lots of things are are not normal human food, and partly because the humans probably won't be the only critters seeking/eating the food plants.

Farms reduce the amount of land per person partly because of mono-culture --we do weeding to ensure only the plants grow that we want to grow- - and partly because of efforts to keep competing food-hunters away (such as making scarecrows to frighten birds).

       €2000 per hectare? bargain!

       ...Do they deliver?

Instead of buying land (which is a very agrarian kind of behavior) buy a ticket to Botswana. You might qualify for a long visa-free stay if you're an EU national. Once there, spend the money you were going to spend on land on buying knowledge and training.

What's the best arrow poison recipe? How do you track things you want to kill? How do you avoid being eaten? What's the best sunscreen replacement? How do you find water? How do not waste it on washing, but maintain some personal hygiene?

While you're at it, work on getting marathon-fit, and accustom yourself to going for days without enough food, whilst still remaining cheerful. To go with that, you also need to learn how to eat huge quantities at one sitting, and how and when to stay perfectly inactive.

As you get to the point where you're at risk of being busted as an illegal alien, you'll head out into the Kalahari. Maybe you'll find friends out there, maybe enemies. Either way, you'll have escaped modern life if the army doesn't track you down and come and rescue you, or wildlife services don't arrange a meeting with God for you. (Ian Khama says, "It's for God to judge the motives of the poachers, not us; all we can do is arrange the meeting." -- which a tolerant atheist would just smile at, instead of mounting ... a pulpit.)

Such great reactions! I enjoyed them thoroughly! :)

I have reservations about this idea.
