Noticing the beautiful pure tones produced by explosively launching heavy objects, it was inescapable that this should be applied to music. The tones produced are virtually bell-like or like that of a tuning fork. They are dependent on the cube, not the object launched in the link.

Start by setting up various rigidly mounted steel (or other material) volumes tuned to pure pitches, which are then set to vibrate by the explosion of sections of detonation cord energized by a keyboard. Much like a steel pan but purer in tone, the applications are limitless.

You wouldn’t have to actually launch anything if you set off the charge at the right spot in relation to the opening in the hollow object, like an organ pipe. The Finns seem to have a special talent in explosives and I hope it comes in handy in the near future as a talent to be able to call upon in distress.

The noise and smoke are an added benefit.

Yes. When you set off an explosion near a hollow volume, music happens. [minoradjustments, Jun 14 2025]

Totally ridiculous idea which will never work - and it's dangerous..... therefore approved for production [+]

(+) for making me think it was a new suicide bomb technique by mistaking the word organ.

[8thof7] would approve, but would no doubt have some technical suggestions. (+)

Thanks, [poc]. I need to enlist that kid with the flamethrower tech.

[fries] An exploding sweater knitted from det cord. A Det Cardigan?

...or a Det Cord Organ Donor Card for those who no longer want their own.

Would you like the headline slot at Explosion Fest? <link>
bs0u0155, Jun 20 2025

Thanks for the offer, but the group is not ready to headline yet, since the recent tragedy. We have finally found a percussionist who does not percuss unpredictably. We don’t want to be a flash-bang in the pan, or play Russian roulette with our booming careers, so a spot between the Tyrannosaurus Tympanis and The Perchlorate Sisters would be great.

Since we lost Dickie due to preignition our sound has changed. We’re doing the most romantic smooth-boom versions of the classic big detonations.

The name for the program should be “The Band with the Det Cord Organs.” Works for us.

Great idea, fries. An exploding membership card!

Fair enough, to be fair, "The Bunker Busters" are a shoe-in for this year. They're notorious however, never entirely sure they've turned up for the gig until showtime.

How do you sound a cube/pipe multiple times?
Are there devices which insert a new charge after each note is fired?
Or are all scores composed for the Det Corgan of necessity very short?
Loris, Jun 23 2025

[Loris] Quite the contrary. Some pieces written expressly for the Det Cord Organ are incredibly tedious, while being loud and unpredictable. Ofttimes damaging to the audience. Aahh. Art.

The individual notes can be repeated in the same way a semi-automatic pistol advances to the next bullet. Some of the controlled explosion which happens at the precise distance from the opening is used to jog the next charge into place. This works well for mid- and high-tones.

Bass notes are detonated behind blast shields that are build into the Organ’s chassis. Some low notes can only be hit once or twice before the entire octave needs to be replaced. Thanks for asking.

Oh, that kind of organ. I'm still in though.
kodabar, Jun 26 2025

Do you think it would be possible to explode multiple notes simultaneously?

       You know, Det chords.
